Is the tunnel location close to Krupnik and there would be a (temporary) interchange north of the tunnel, near Simitli?
here's the location. You can see also the motorway alignment and the interchanges.

btw: I think there will be more than one Blagoevgrad interchange. What's the correct name of the future interchange at the end of lot 2, Blagoevgrad-South?
You mean this one? Yes, it's named Blagoevgrad-South. It will part of lot 3.1. In total there will be 3 interchanges serving Blagoevgrad - the other two are part of lot 2: Kocherinovo I/C and Blagoevgrad I/C.

Thanks. That means, the u/c section ends at Blagoevgrad I/C. I think it's a strange name because there's Blagoevgrad-South too. I think B-North, B-West or B-Center would be better to avoid confusion. Anyway, if Zheleznitsa tunnel will not be opened together with the remaing lot 3.1 subsections, we'll have three sections:

- Blagoevgrad I/C - Blagoevgrad-South I/C (6.8 km)
- Blagoevgrad-South I/C - Zheleznitsa I/C** (5.1km)
- Zheleznitsa I/C - Krupnik (5.8 km)

I measured the lengths but 6.8km + 5.8km = 12.6km, not 11.9km!?

** It's not a full interchange, A3 access only from/to the south. Zheleznitsa-Krupnik must be opened before the tunnel section or section end must be at Simitli i/c.

Hello !

Shipka is closed? There can travel by car on Shipka?
Closing of the Shipka is due to work in Gabrovo belt?
They wanted to go with some friends last week and Shipka car was locked.
They were turned back and went on Na Republic.

Thank you very much for your help!

It´s opened now. The Shipka pass had been temporary closed to traffic on 22 August due to anniversary of the Shipka battle. source

Some pics of the construction of Maritsa motorway (A4), lot 1 (Chirpan-Dimitrovgrad).

Recently opened part of the A2 near Shumen. Taken with iphone.

The difference with the 'old' stretch of A2 is by all means huge. Roads like that would be closed in most countries in Western Europe and deemed unsuitable for driving (maybe Belgium is an exeption :P) I am wondering however what type of asphalt is used? This new stretch already featured some cracks here and there and it just does not seem durable at all. Does the climate have such a huge impact here? Because traffic volumes aren't crazy high.

Hopefully, some 30 km (red sections on the map, green is the detour via I-2 road) of A2 Shumen-Varna will be renovated soon. RIA announced that the works will start on 1 September.

That's good news, but it's again throwing money at a bottomless well when the quality of the tarmac leaves much to be desired. How old is the current stretch if I may ask?

In 2005 Shumen-east - Kaspichan opened (12.8 km), in 2013 Panayot Volovo - Shumen-east, and in 2015 Belokopitovo - Panayot Volovo. I'm not sure about the exact timeline of openings before that.

Let's continue with A4, lot 1.
@the bridge over Maritsa river

towards south

north of the bridge

tnx to harry_gg

For comparison, that was the situation 45 days ago

towards south

@34, towards south. Lot 2 is at the background

@the end of lot 1, towards north

tnx to harry_gg

The deadline for completion of lot 1 of A4 in the end of October seems possible from what we've seen at lot 4 of A3. The main efforts will be concentrated b/n 21 and 36 km. The remaining stretch, b/n 5 and 21 km already has first layer of asphalt.

Maritsa motorway (A4), lot 1 (Chirpan-Dimitrovgrad) was supposed to be opened this fall, right? From the pictures above it does not look that's going to be the case....

The A4 segment and the Northern Ring of Sofia are supposed to be finished in 2015 to avail of EU Funding promised between 2007 and 2013. End 2015 is a use it or lose it deadline.

As they are obviously working really really hard on them now the EU may well cut some slack if the 2 projects overrun into 2016 and hand over the funds to the government. They will both obviously be substantially complete by end 2015. This mean all major structures at least and the continual outline of the road mainline.

The A3 bit near the Greek border is another road project availing of those 2007 to 2013 funds. It looked pretty incomplete in early summer to say the least.
