Let's take a look at the works at the Gabrobo bypass, which is meant to serve one day the future Shipka tunnel. Unfortunately, due to the delay 66 mln levs in EU financing are already lost and are due be covered from the government budget.

Guys, thank you for your advices. You made a giant progress since I was in Bulgaria last time (in 2005) before this year's experience. Keep it up.

Okay then.
I entered Bulgaria through Calafat - Vidin bridge. To be honest, the bridge seemed to me quite overestimated in terms of European transport. I am not here to chalange its importance for Romania or Bulgaria, but for what I saw, it fulfil mostly regional demands. I know it was planned during the turbulences in countries the E-75 runs through, but if I compare Calafat - Vidin crossing with Preševo - Kumanovo, it looks like an ant and an elephant.

At the time I arrived to border crossing, only one booth was operated and there was three cars in front on me (two with BG plates, one with RO). There were also two lorries with RO plates - nothing else.

The bridge is a masterpiece. The bypass of Vidin was brand new - it seemed like it had just been surfaced - the perfect asphalt for roller-skating or kick-scootering.

Before my trip I asked here if I should use the road nr. 1 or 11 in relation Vidin - Montana. You suggested nr. 1. I was happy as there was a road closure for vehicles exceeding 7t which meant no lorries to me.

The road had also brand new asphalt, but some sections (maybe 20 - 25 places) were unpaved and U/C. There was a gravel, but very sharp so I was afraid I can get a flat tire. I really appreciate the size of built-up-area sign. The brand new 2+2 bypass of Montana was superb. The road arround Vraca was patched by also driveable. But there were quite a lot of hookers (during a day). Perhaps for lorries.

A2 motorway to Sofia was old but good. I enjoyed 140 kph. The bypass of Sofia was however terrible. But if I am not mistaken, thing are getting changed.

The A3 motorway was the best part of our journey. Good job except some 70kph restrictions before bridges. I really do not think it is necessary during a sunny day.

I left Bulgaria in Kulata.

This short section is already considered part of Kalotina Motorway.

These signs constraint 70 are required only when it snows, then you really are needed. The bridges are icing because of the currents underneath. Not compulsory in 95% of the year only on days with constant sub-zero temperatures, which are only a total of about two weeks. During the rest of no decelerates them. No respect them

Good point. As it's been mentioned the stretch could be considered as a part of the future Kalotina motorway (A7?). The interchange itself is one of the largest in BG, if not the largest.

And Mramor village now enjoys the direct access to the Sofia Northern Bypass.

Largest by area enclosed. Belokopitovo however is the biggest by length of the interconnections.

Of course it is but I guess it's not (yet) signed A7, is it? Any other number?

For my list... Should I call it 'Kalotina motorway'?

Kalotina motorway is the best choice at the moment, I think.

Technically this part, as well as the whole IC was built as part of the Ringroad's western arc - 2nd part project.Which is technically part of Kalotina motorway project. So there's no simple answer here

But it's definitely more an A7 part than SNST or anything else.

Indeed the corresponding small piece westward of the I/C with the newly launched Western arc is actually part of the future A7 (Kalotina-Sofia) but until at least one projected section from this side of the motorway is built, you can keep it for the sake of simplicity as nonexistent.

For the fans of Bulgarian motorways (and I know they're millions around the World ) I just decided to make a really quick overview of what's to come in 2016 and 2017:

A3 section 3.3 Kresna-Novo Delchevo- U/C
A3 section 3.1 Blagoevgrad - Simitli/Krupnik works should technically start any day now
A3 section 3.1 tunnel part (Zeleznica Tunnel+2km of motorway) - tendered
A3 section 3.2 Simitli/Krupnik-Kresna -still unclear what will be built at this point but needs to start soon anyway
A2 ~8km from Yablanitsa to Boaza(III-305 & I-4 interseciton) - results of tender should be ready next week and construction was mentioned to begin immediately.
A2 Belokopitovo to Buhovtsi should be tendered next week iirc.
II-18 Sofia Ring Road eastern arc, Kazichene bridge 2nd CW U/C already
II-18 Sofia Ring Road eastern arc to be resufraced and hopefully put into motorway/expyway standard(pedestrian crossing, illegal U-turn options and traffic light at Kazichene removed)
II-18 Sofia Ring Road southern arc - Gorublyane IC to be built next year, section A1 to Mladost 4 to follow
A7 Kalotina Motorway - Kalotina-Dragoman - rumored to start next year
A7 Kalotina Motorway - Hrabarsko IC to SNST - rumored to start next year
I-1 (E79) Mezdra - Botevgrad section - rumored to start next year.
Bourgas northern bypass - ~4km from I-6 to I-9, 2x2 grade separated - rumored to start next year.

A2 Belokopitovo - Buhovtsi is already in a tender procedure. Personally I don't believe that any of the rumored sections will start next year. Even if the government finds how to finance any of these sections, which is uncertain at the moment, it could take an year to pass through the tenders and appeals. BTW, in the rumored sections we can include the Byala bypass, part of the Veliko Tarnavo - Ruse motorway project.

They started a few weeks ago, somewhere in August. Before that, in July, probes were sent to inspect the condition of the works already done in the 80s'.The site is not big and there wasn't much in the news until after works were already underway. They say it will be finished by the end of the year.
