This is ordinary red reflective cat eye:

And here are even more of those "amazing" cat eyes. None in the middle between crashbarriers, though.

Soooo ...... , what' the point?

Keber, jsut to inform you, this was when the motorway was still under construction, soooooo
You can say anything you want about the Struma, it´s a very good motorway and I can tell you taht the twolaned E-79 part from Dupnica is the very best twolaned road I have ever driven. I adore it. oh and do you know that at least 10 15 signs at the end of the struma motorway section introduce ending of motorway, I have to take a pic of it becuase I have never sign such a thing.

That's very true. Most brand-new freeways are.

yes, I have, I remember the very new Croatian mootorway from Serbian border no being as smooth as the Struma motorway still is, but doens´t matter anyway since the Croatian motorway was also very smooth. and x-type, I think its motre difficult to make smooth and flat roads on mountainous terrain, because if the road goes up it´s mroe difficult to make it flat I think, on a road with no evelation it just must be easier to do this.

I still wonder, what that in-between-crash-barrier-thing is.

Any real pictures?

Hi all,

I must admit I've been following this thread with increasing amazement. In what way is this road different to dozens of other roads in practically any country? I'm not saying the road is no good (I've never been to Bulgaria), but what's so special about it?

And what's the thing with the shiny crash barriers?
Surely all crash barriers are shiny when they're new, and then stop being shiny. However they're still crash barriers, even when the shine wears off.

And why is it unusual to have two-lane exit ramps?

As to the reflective things, do you mean like little posts with red reflectors on them? We have those on most roads in Israel, but they are at the sides, not in the middle. We also have cats eyes (white in the middle, yellow at the sides) and reflectors screwed to the crash barriers.

There is also a point to this posting - can someone let me know where this mythological highway is? I looked for it on Google Earth and couldn't find it. Does it have a road number? All I could find was a River Struma, and an E79, which I gather is not it.

Please explain this completely wacky thread to a mystified non-Bulgarian.

It's very hard to find in Google Earth because the region the Struma is in is currently low-res. And also I'm not sure if the low-res parts that should contain the motorway weren't taken before it was actually built.

The Struma motorway is currently only 25 km and it runs parallel to the E79, south of Pernik. As you probably guessed, the motorway is named after the river, which flows south towards Greece.

The hype is due to one member of this forum in particular , but the rest of us like to maintain it for fun and some curiousity also (at least in my case).

Come on guys, stop that pointless debate...

The more you make joke of Radi and Struma motorway, the more he tries to prove it is the best motorway in the world.

Now i don't see anything special in Struma motorway. And frankly... i see nothing. Ok, i know: great landscape, good 2-carriageway road, 2-level crossings, crashbarriers, emergency lanes and... That's all.
Radi will shoot new pictures, and then we will see if there's something special. It is 19 or 25 km long, so he can even make a movie.

BTW: Happy birthday KIWIKAAS.
