Perhaps it's a motorway because the motorway standards in Bulgaria are a bit lower? (a guess).
Furthermore, according to Wikipedia (50% chance it's true), the Struma highway is in the list of motorways. Still, same as you Chris, I have my doubts if it is really a motorway (especially because of the small exit lanes)

Edit: radi of course made the wikipedia page about Struma, so we don't really know if its an motorway or not.

Yeah, wikipedia is extremely unreliable and biased to that, so i don't believe that kind of stuff from wikipedia. I remember the Struma also featured expressway-signs.

What´s with the pavement, Chris, I am really asking me hwo muc degree of intelligence you have. I just told you that it has motorway signs at the beginning of the motorway, the green ones as all motorways with green motorway signs, it has green directions signs, it has very wide emergency lanes and so on, why should it be an expressway?

Chris, if you don´t believe me search for engils information of bulgarian news agencies in the internet and see that it´s labeled a motorway, not an expressway, furthermore I am sure that it has better pavement than many real motorways in europe.

Whoa whoa, is your last name Struma or something? I just commented it looked more like an expressway to me. It's not the end of the world you know.

THE Struma motorway

Such pics are pics of hope and optimism, that´s what feeling very new motorways give me, that was the Struma motorway when it was new, it is really beautiful, yet magnificent. The whole motorway should be closed for some days in order to clean it so that it can look like this again. It had the shiniest crashbarriers of all motorways. I am convinced that noone can show me pics of new motorways which look so expensive and clean when they were new, to me it looks like a very expensive motorway here. guys, the pic above is the reason and origin why I like roads and motorways, before I´ve driven on this the first time I didn´t care about roads AT ALL.

Maybe some of the pictures create an illusion of an expressway but I believe it is a motorway. However, it's a motorway built in a lower standard than most of the west european ones. Maybe it just complies with lenient, bulgarian standards or maybe it's negligence or costs-cutting. It looks like someone built it not paying attention to details. Details such as the exit lane which is badly shaped.

I'm still very confused about the 90 km/h speed limit though. Now what the hell that means?

There are some restrictions here too...usually,they are present where there are dangerous crosswinds, too "tight" curves or "steep" grades. It means nothing more than something that human engineering cant overcome,or it would be too expensive to counter. For example, our M7 turns into an expressway for about 3-4 kms along the Balaton(around the new viaduct),because it would have costed too much to build it with lesser grade(so with motorway standards).

I still can't see what's wrong with it (except for the dust).

we have earlier seen that exit ramps are unusually tight and sharp. almost at polish A4. it's not all about crashbarriers and wide SOS lanes.

We have many 40-kph exit ramps, they don't bother me.

40kph exit ramps are also typical in Germany.

The Struma looks fine. It's a good looking motorway. A bit dusty in places but generally good.

And radi. Nobdy gives a rat's arse about shiney barriers

Yeah, dust annoys me most.

And I hate the word "arse"; especially of a rat.

They determine the look of a motorway.
