I dont think the main problem with Lujiazui is the oversized plots. The most significant issue with the area is the lack of an integrated street life with shops, cafés, restaurants and so on.

Why is the pace of this project so damn slow? It almost feels like it’s put on hold, just like with Jialing Faying in Chongqing…

Also that, there definately needs more street activity.

But I think that if plots are oversized, then even if shops, cafes etc are placed at the bases of these buildings, it will be a nuisance to walk around. Idk, better than nothing I guess

It seems that it was their intention to do so. Walking in Lujiazui is a pretty impersonal experience of giant monoliths around you, but take forever to actually get from one to another. They seem to have planned this area to be financial services and (regional) HQ of large internationals, not much else.

To see real street level commercial activity, their are many areas in Puxi that are vastly superior, and are not planned as LJZ.

That's usually why I say Puxi > Pudong.

People's Square (and the axis that is Nanjing Road/Waitan) ARE the heart of the city tbh...Lujizaui is just going to absorb the large developments that can't fit into the former area. So I think lujiazui is fine...for its purpose. Actually, walking around the river on the Pudong side is much more relaxing than the Puxi side. Next time you have an opportunity, do it!

Yeah they are definitely pouring the base, its size is comparable to Ping'an and probably equally as thick, so it'll eat up a lot of concrete.

No, the design has been changed, slightly.

Original, former, and current design:
