UTM, Newcastle to boost Iskandar
2010/01/05

JOHOR BARU: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Newcastle University of United Kingdom are working to bring medical researchers into Iskandar Malaysia.
UTM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zaini Ujang said the arrangement with the UK university's medical branch in Nusajaya here was expected to turn the development corridor into a major education and research hub.

"We want to attract teaching staff from the Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed Malaysia) in Nusajaya to conduct research at UTM's biomedical and health sciencies faculties," he said yesterday.

NUMed Malaysia is expected to have nearly 20 academic staff in its first phase when it begins operations next year.

Zaini said he would lead a UTM team to Newcastle University's main campus next month for talks on the possibility of training UTM staff in the university.

He said UTM had many joint interests with Newcastle University in the fields of sustainability, aging and cancer-related research in medicine.

"Newcastle will be physically here next year. Following this, UTM is expected to develop programmes for, among others, visiting professorships."

Meanwhile, Newcastle University pro-vice chancellor, Prof C. P. Day, said the student population of NUMed Malaysia was expected to reach nearly 750 in eight years of operation.

Among courses offered by NUMed Malaysia is the acclaimed bachelor of medicine/bachelor of surgery (MBBS) programme.

From 2012, NUMed Malaysia intends to introduce the Newcastle University bioscience degrees and master's in clinical education.

[news] Senai-wenzhou Trade Centre To Turn Iskandar Malaysia Into Trade Hub

Port of Tanjung Pelepas chairman Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman said the substantial investment was expected to generate RM10 billion worth of spin-offs in 25 years including providing jobs for locals.

On another matter, Ghani said Malaysia and Singapore would jointly promote the Ramsar wetland site in Johor and Sungai Buloh Wetland Reserves in the republic as new eco-tourism attractions.

The collaborative effort was the first initiative under the Ministerial Level Committee for Iskandar Malaysia, he said, adding that a foreign consultant has been appointed to conduct studies on wetland preservation, product promotion and visitors' target.

On the "Echoes of Life" Sungai Pulai book, Ghani said it contained valuable information towards enlightening the people on the richness of the priceless natural environment.

The book, jointly published by the Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Johor branch, is available at MPH bookstores.

A limited edition of only 1,500 copies are available at RM299 a copy.

Johor MNS president Associate Prof Dr Maketab Mohamed was present at the book launch.

I guess most JBians would share the same feeling as yours... I've heard from many ex-JBians who are now Singaporeans or KVians about how stagnant JB has been all this while, due to the poor management and corrupted Johor govt. who oppose anything Singapore.

There's a reason why anyone who cross the border of JB-Singapore would realise the huge difference btween these two cities -- Johor govt. would do anything to be different from Singapore... in a very bad way!

By the way, I just got back from Taipei, Taiwan. I guess in many ways, JB could learn from Taipei... they share many similarities. Landscape wise etc... Nusajaya, Medini etc could emulate the like of Neihu district (in Taipei) rather than Shenzhen.

Another thing that JB desperately need is -- a good metro transport system. They can learn from how the whole Taipei City is connected, despite being a relatively chaotic city when it comes to transport.

SATS, China partner to invest RM200m in Johor trade centre
By Anis Ibrahim Published: 2010/01/06

SENAI Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) and its Chinese partner will invest RM200 million in a trade centre in Johor.

The 8ha Senai-Wenzhou Trade Centre will provide manufacturers from Wenzhou, China, with a gateway to expand their business in Asean and the Asia Pacific.

Once the centre is completed in three years, it could generate economic benefits worth some RM10 billion over 25 years, said SATS chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman.

"This collaboration between SATS and the Wenzhou Association is an excellent example of cooperation that promises to provide enormous benefits to the airport and to Johor in general," he told reporters at the launch of the Senai-Wenzhou Trade Centre in Johor Baru yesterday.

Wenzhou, located south of Shanghai, is famous for its chemical plants, shipbuilding industry and leather products.

Heading the investors at the event was Senai-Wenzhou Trade Development Pte Ltd chairman Vincent Tan Kuan Hin.

"The large exhibition space will not only make the trade centre an excellent venue for Wenzhou trade and public exhibitions, it will also be able to cater to larger trade audiences.

"Its location adjacent to an airport also ensures maximum convenience and accessibility for users from all over the world," he said.

The trade centre will have a built-up area of 80,000 sq m.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman launched the project and said he was happy that investors from Wenzhou had decided to continue their business expansion plans despite the economic slowdown.

"This is a clear indication that interest is still strong among international business communities, in this case, from China.

"Let me assure the Wenzhou community that the Senai International Airport is an ideal platform to establish their presence in this region," he said.

daeng_jal, that says alot about the kind of people who are currently running that Southern state. No 'bad-mouthing' them, or else we will have to watch out, just like Singapore!

This is the Neihu district of Taipei, a more organised Taipei suburban in comparison with the old central Taipei.

From wikipedia:
Neihu District (traditional Chinese: 內湖區; Tongyong Pinyin: Nèihú Cyu; Hanyu Pinyin: Nèihú Qū; Wade-Giles: Nei-hu Ch'u; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Lāi-ô͘-khu) is one of Taipei City's twelve districts. Neihu means "inner lake." The older name originates from the Ketagalan word Tayour (transliterated by the Dutch as Cattajo), meaning woman's head ornament.

Many mountainous roads and paths, which are ideal for hiking, connect Neihu with the neighboring Shilin District and Yangmingshan National Park. Although it is a flood prone region, Neihu has experienced huge growth with the construction of the Neihu Technology Park and hypermarkets such as Costco, RT Mart, Carrefour, B&Q.

The Tri-Service General Hospital, which is a teaching hospital of the National Defense Medical Center, is also in Neihu. The Wuchih Mountain Military Cemetery borders Neihu.

Neihu's attractions include Dahu Park (大湖公園), famous for its picturesque footbridge, and Bishan Temple (碧山巖), a large Taoist temple dedicated to Chen Yuanguang on the mountainside that affords a panoramic view of Taipei. In the vicinity of Bishan Temple are a number of other Taoist and Buddhist temples, as well as orchards and fruit farms where tourists can pick their own fruit. An extensive network of hiking trails criss-crosses the mountainous regions of the northern part of Neihu.

S'pore, M'sia in eco project

JOHOR BARU - A BILATERAL study between Malaysia and Singapore to tap the eco-tourism potential of the Sungai Pulai wetland reserve in south-western Johor is expected to be completed by June.

This marks the two countries' first joint ministerial committee project on tourism, reported The New Straits Times on Thursday.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said an international consultant has been engaged to draw up a proposal on how to turn Sungai Pulai, one of Malaysia's six Ramsar sites (wetlands of international importance), into a tourist destination.

The effort will be based on the same method and strategy used by Singapore in promoting its first wetland reserve, Sungei Buloh, near Kranji.

'The study will identify the kind of the eco-tourism activities, the categories of visitors who may be interested and the need for strict management of the wetland reserve,' he said here on Wednesday. 'Johor is also blessed with an abundance of natural wonders, and Sungai Pulai is a good example... Together with the rapid development in Iskandar Malaysia, the state aims to preserve its natural beauty and carry out sustainable development.'

Spread over 9,126ha, the Sungai Pulai forest reserve is the second largest mangrove area in Peninsular Malaysia. It was gazetted by Johor in 1923 and was listed as a Ramsar site on Jan 31, 2003.

HOMEGROWN plant and terminal engineering specialist PEC Ltd has clinched a US$174.5 million contract for works in Iskandar Malaysia, southern Johor state's development region.

PEC won the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract through its subsidiary Audex Pte Ltd.

The deal from ATT Tanjung Bin Sdn Bhd (ATB) involves providing works for an 841,000 cubic metre oil terminal. The EPC works are expected to be completed by March 2012.

ATB, which is 100 per cent owned by Asia Tank Terminal Ltd, will undertake the design, construction and operation of the facility for the storage of fuel oil, middle distillates and light distillates.

PEC, which was listed on the Singapore Exchange mainboard last year, provides project works and maintenance services to petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries in Asia and the Middle East.

Robert Dompeling, group CEO of PEC, said: 'The project in Tanjung Bin will strengthen our excellent track record in EPC works for major terminal projects and will open up further opportunities for us in the oil-and-gas sector.

'Going forward, we will continue to pursue new business opportunities in Asia, the Middle East and other locations to leverage on opportunities in the oil- and-gas sector,' he added.

PEC expects the newly awarded project to boost its earnings and financial performance for the current financial year ending June 30, 2010.
