Unbelievable massive scale of some of these projects. Interesting that amongst these giant hotel projects and just beside this sprawling shrine are big pockets of shabby, semi-derelict areas that look like either slum housing, junk yards or back-street workshops.

Is it something to do with being too near the shrine? -i.e. being at risk to it's expansion so no-one invests in those areas?

All the slums are part of the big 400 hectare redevelopment around the shrine but like everywhere else in Iran, lack of management and funds has made the progress very slow.

Thanx for posting these pix. They totally "wowed" me.... and i thot the Grand Mosque in Mecca was big....No doubt the Saudis are trying to expand both the Holy Mosques in Mecca and Medina.
