It's as straight as an arrow and doesn't look that narrow (sorry for the rhyme):

btw, there is the same situation as near Grosuplje in Slovenia. same ex-YU road, same thing: upgrading to a motorway was made in the way that new half took another route, and old road became an another half. same situation is in Italy with A7. there they even have T intersections (without left turns, fortunately)

The expressway (2x2) between Tetovo and Gostivar:

After Gostivar, there is no more highway, the road is getting into a mountainous area, as it continues towards Mavrovo and Ohrid. Almost half of the section between Gostivar and Kicevo, the road is 2+1.

Croatian style direction sign? hm... And the northern bypass of Skopje witch is 30 km 2+2 with median has the newest signs because its most dated to be finished. Now Kumanovo-Serbian border 20km is upgrading and should be put in service till the end of this year.

One of our main problems is that we actually don't have any standard for road signs in Macedonia. Most of the signs are wrong (in terms of lacking some information or proper road numbering), some are unmaintained, as well as old (Titov Veles can be still find on some signs). So, i would say that we would be very happy if our signs looked like the Croatian, but they don't and they differ a lot between the new and old sections. But the absurd doesn't stops here: even on the new section of the Skopje Ring Road, which was build by 2 different companies, signs are slightly different in the first 13 km, than the second section. Here are the examples:

Skopje Ring Road:

2nd section build by a Greek company:

1st section build by a macedonian company:

And the old Yugoslav style road signs along the M1/E75, which again are all different (in terms of information they carry and visual differences):

Note how on one sign it is written Белград/Belgrad (Macedonian Cyrillic and Macedonian Latin) and on other Белград/Beograd (Macedonian Cyrillic and Serbian/Croatian), but none of them is correct, since it should be Белград/Belgrade.
On the other signs, the arrow is pointing fist up towards the exit, than down...

that sign with down arrow must be quite old because those are Yugoslav styled signs from 80es.

has anybody seen some more direction signs like that one to Tetovo with open arrows?

Great news Martin!

I wonder why the Macedonian government contributes such a small part of the total budget... € 6 vs € 245 million.

I have a question; is the M1 north of Kumanovo to the Serbian border already widened to a 2x2 motorway? I believe the deadline was October 2010.
