I am afraid not, Chris. It's really funny, how are 7 kilometres of motorway being built in over 2 years!

Parliament gives green light for loan for Koridor 10

Quote:
23.3.2011 15:32:00 | Author/Source PressCut

Several days ago Macedonian Parliamentary deputies adopted an act which gives green light for a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for the construction of motorway section Demir Kapija-Smokvica on Koridor 10. The project schedules construction of a new modern 28 kilometres-long section of the motorway.

Deputy Minister of Finance, Nedim Ramizi, explained that the project will be financed from several sources, namely: European Unions, IPA, European Investment Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and Macedonian budget. Since the site for the motorway is rough, the project is considered to be extremely complex. It will also include construction of several large objects like bridges, tunnels, overpasses, underpasses, and loops.

Macedonian transport minister Mile Janakieski has presented the results of infrastructure, transport and municipal investment sectors. According to Janakieski, this government is building the motorway section Kumanovo-Tabanovce worth EUR 15 million. It built the Skopje bypass, which was put into operation in 2008.

Final preparations for the construction of Smokvica-Gevgelija section are underway. The Project is worth EUR 270 million and will be realized with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank.

Moreover, concessions are being issued for several sections in Macedonia, including Kriva Palanka-Kumanovo, Miladinovci-Stip-Kocan and Gostivar-Struge sections, Janakieski explains.

Infrastructure projects on hold

Quote:
3.5.2011 14:35:00 | Author/Source PressCut

Capacities necessary for sustainable economic development, such as Corridors 8 and 10, railway, large hydro power plants etc., are still at stages where studies are being carried out and tenders invited. The key infrastructure projects the Macedonian government promised to carry out are in the same phase as in 2006.

The Macedonian government promised in its 2006 election programme to put the motorway en route to Greece into operation. The concession procedure for Corridor 8 has started late last year instead in 2006. Companies insist on the realization of projects in order to prevent the business community to remain in a dead end.

Aleksandar Panov, head of Makstil, warns that Corridor 10 was jeopardized by current events in Greece. He says that for this reason, alternative road projects need to be realized.

Apparently, these eight kilometers of Kumanovo - Tabanovci motorway should be finished sometime before or just after the scheduled Macedonian elections - not sure when those elections are scheduled only that they will be held this year.

Construction of motorways is very important in Macedonia, hence both major political parties have YouTube videos about this topic:

The ruling party:

The main oppositon party:

Actually, from what I'm just reading, Macedonians are very frustrated that the construction, which started in 2008/2009 and was only supposed to last 18 months, has prolonged so much...

Chris, if you're willing to decrypt Macedonian language, you can find more info & photos here:

Motorway to Tabanovce to be completed by September

Quote:
2.6.2011 14:24:00 | Author/Source PressCut

The Macedonian Road Agency expects the section from Kumanovo to the border with Serbia to be finished by June 30, while civil engineers assess that it will be open for traffic in September or October. Driving in modern motorway from Kumanovo to the border crossing Tabanovce will most probably remain only a wish this summer too.

Even though the construction of the section of the motorway was intensive in the past period, it is uncertain whether the workers will manage to finish it by the final deadline, which expires in a month. The relatively short section, which is a part of Corridor 10, has been under construction for almost 4 years.

Macedonia loses billions due to slow corridor construction

Quote:
19.7.2011 14:40:00 | Author/Source PressCut

Macedonia has lost some EUR 8 billion because of poor infrastructure, claim experts who warn that the damage will continue to grow if the construction of the Corridors 8 and 10 remains slow. The fact that European companies insist on Corridor 4 increases the pressure to complete Corridor 10 as soon as possible.

A university professor warns that immediate measures have to be taken in such a situation. He says certain changes on regional level need to be initiated, especially in terms of increasing traffic flow in Macedonia and the region and introduction of customs exemptions.

Moreover, business community in Macedonia has already warned that investments in efficient infrastructure are a key precondition for sustainable economic growth.

Looks like Macedonia started using ovals. Didn't know that Pristina is in Kyrgyzstan.
