Actually, I don't think it's really that bad. They have to handle Euro coins, and the exchange rate in Poland for Euro coins to Zloty is normally around 25% worse than for notes.

It's also easy enough to get denars, so really, the Euro price is also for convenience. Only accepting 5 Euro notes (and giving change in MKD) was ridiculous, but I don't think it's fair to say that they're robbing tourists if tourists want to pay in EUR as opposed to MKD.

Even in Poland, you'll lose about 10% by paying in EUR on the motorways.

It's exactly the same thing in Macedonia. Also, it's easier to operate with coins when the prices are rounded like 1,50 Euros or 2,50 Euros.

In Albania official exchange rate of Lek for Euro is 140. In coins is 100, around 30% less.

It's about normal, I think. It also means that if the MKD loses value quickly, they won't have to increase the price - and it's much easier to only accept coins worth at least 50c.

On the link there is a video with some interesting shots from the construction works on the Demir Kapija-Smokvica section of the A1 highway.

http://alfa.mk/News.aspx?id=80309#.U9VUifmSzTq

When the works will finish (in 2016), the highway will have 2 double tunnels, 6 double bridges, 12 overpasses and underpasses, two interchanges and a center for traffic control. The old road will became a regional road that will connect the local villages.

700 workers are involved in the construction works - 200 of them are from Greece, and the rest are from Macedonia. The estimated cost of this highway is 210 million Euros.

Two photos of the reconstruction of the section Veles-Katlanovo of the A1 highway, in length of 23.5 km. The reconstruction will cost 5.7 million Euros, and the works will last one year.

It seems that they are going to build from scratch all layers of the road, aren`t they?

Yes, because the pavement on this section was in really bad condition due to heavy traffic and the weather influences. You can see on the second photo how huge cracks are there on the asphalt.

Both carriageways? Last time I drove there few years ago so I can`t remember condition of A1 there.
What`s about A2 from Kumanovo to Miladinovtsi. I drove there in May and this motorway also needs some seorious modernization.

Actually, there are plans for the reconstruction of the section Miladonovci-Kumanovo. Probably it will happen in 2015.

On the motorway toll topic: all patarinas were 1,50 € no matter what amout it was in MKD. And I've noticed covered MK on new Macenonian licence plates only on some cars. Has the official policy of Greek border police changed? or Macedonians cover the abbreviation only when cross the border.

Isn't that price a bit too low for a significant reconstruction of a 23.5km road? Or will the price rise with annex contracts and the like?

I guess the Greeks forgot about their irrational policy
