Steps to widen OMR-ECR link roads
CHENNAI: The Highways Department has initiated steps to widen link roads connecting the information technology corridor (Old Mamallapuram Road, OMR) and the entertainment corridor (East Coast Road, ECR). In the next 10 days, the department will re-lay the link road and take up patch works as a temporary measure.
The department had prioritised the Sholinganallur road to connect East Coast Road and Old Mamallapuram Road. Official sources told The Hindu on Wednesday that re-tendering had to be initiated in view of the increase in the price of bitumen and the delay in land acquisition. The proposed Sholinganallur link would be a four-lane carriageway. It will be an important connection given that vehicular traffic, especially buses/coaches that transport the staff of IT companies round the clock, has increased. And on weekends, this road is optimally used by holiday crowd in view of the two-way vehicular traffic to ECR and OMR to connect Velachery and beyond and also a popular temple located on the link road. The department has embarked on patch works on this link road. The Government is planning to integrate the two corridors to ensure better road connectivity, considering the increasing leisure/amusement-related activities sparked by the IT boom. On widening East Coast Road, the sources said the Government was considering whether it could "alter the present alignment ... without making any major demolitions of encroachments" and seek legal remedy to take this corrective action, and geometrics changes of the present ECR. "The Government is also examining the feasibility of effecting changes in the toll collection on ECR after ... widening the road," the sources said. The sources said the Highways Department was keen on improving the roads connecting Velachery and the Thoraipakkam-Pallikaranai road. http://www.hindu.com/2007/02/18/stor...1815500700.htm |

Chennai-Bangalore national highway.
The other road which connects Sriperumbudur with Chennai suburban area(near Mahindra Worldcity) is Vandalur - Kanchipuram road which is being converted into a six lane highway by the state govt. I dont know what is the status of the work now. |

This is a wonderful idea.
I recently (1-2 weeks ago) heard over the radio that the NewYork Metro (Bus) is planning a similar system. They are going to monitor the bus location thru GPS periodically. They will install elctronic display screens at the bus stops. they will display the current location of the bus and expected time of arrival (at each of the bus stops on its route). so, commuters would know how long they should wait at the bus stop in order to board the bus. (chances are, NY Metro may be using the same software, developed at International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore). it is likely to be implemented some time this year. About the highway issue, I don't see the necessity for a 14 lane ( let alone 20
) lane highway anywehre in India. I don't foresee building such mamoth highways as a solution. India has an extensive railway network ( which carries bulk of the freight acrosos the nation ) a thriving airline industry ( where even second tier cities are well connected ), a growing and ever expanding urban public transport network ( MRTS/metro/BRTS ). Building a transportation system that suits entirely cars perhaps is not the right way. American cities and motorways were built predominantly having the car in mind, a trend that is widely being replaced by building public/integrated transport models.I think the European transportation model as opposed to the American one, is a better example for India to innovate upon. The issues they face are similar to that of India- old cities with narrow roads, public transportation, higher population density etc. Last edited by Fusionist; February 18th, 2007 at 07:35 AM. |

Keep in mind, however, that even with the European model, high-speed road transport cannot be neglected (witness Madrid, for example).

Head count for IT can be taken as 100 sft per person. For ITES / BPO, it will be 60 to 75 sft per person. In Call Centres it can be 40 to 50 sft per persom. |

an update - work has restarted at a frenetic pace from the SRP Tools junction southwards, and close to a kilometer has been flattened out and the foundation for the new road has been laid..
equipment is stationed in this stretch 24 hours and more is arriving by the hour.. one half of the road has been closed to traffic and the bluemetal-mud foundation layer has been laid and rolled.. it's now ready for the laying of tar road.. at this kind of pace i expect another 3 kms of the road (except service lanes) to be complete by end March.. unfortunately i have no pics because my camera conked out, but i'll get some as soon as we replace our camera..

Is the stretch from Tidel to SRP is also complete? I mean, few months back, the service lane and other stuffs are not completed. Or is it in the same condition?
