"The water and sewer lines would be conveyed under the footpath. "

For the Love of God, hope they separated the Rain Water drain from Sewer Lines.
Great Job, Anniyan.
Thanks Ferrari_Fan, waiting for you pics...

I don't know how successful this toll collection is going to be. While I would say 90% (wild guess) of users of this road are from city, this would change dramatically. This because we will see lot more residential developments along this corridor. And we will see more cars being used by people who live here than by people from city who use company operated buses. I think either everyone should pay or no one does.

Great Work Anniyan..

Snaps from Madhya Kaliash - Tidel Park part will be an treat..

Toll collection will be an success.. very soon toll will be introduced in GHQ .. so i belive it will become norm of the day..

Tolls on GQ or even ECR are very different from collecting tolls on OMR. OMR would be used everyday by thousands of cars, all passing through it within one hour. So, there is the issue of traffic jams. There would more issues:
1. How are you going to distinguish people who drive a couple of KMs as opposed to someone who drives 20 kms.
2. What about cars that join at Thoraipakkam or Sholing? Would these also have to pay tolls? How are they going to differentiate them from residents along this corridor?

Tolling such city roads are essentially flawed. Imagine tolling all city roads. Why discriminate users of this road alone and not Anna salai, Ponamalle Rd or IRR? And why did I pay that road tax in the first place?

good idea for a thread Anniyan !

The plans look great. But however I am not sure if its a bit misleading ? Can someone clarify

Is all parts of the IT highways 6 lane plus service lane ? or is it just phase 1
How many intersections ? I dont see any flyovers planned
How about pedestrian crossways ? Footbridges ?? I dont see any
How about canal accesibility ? Is there some beutification plans for the stretch of land between the highway and the canals ? The article mentions roadside greenery but does it include the stretch up to the canal ? whome does this land belong to ?

btw the gateway architecture and the toll booth looks great.

looking forward to your pics Ferrari

this is a very valid question.
usually, only highways built under BOT basis by private investors are tolled.
roadways under city limits are usually funded by the local Govt agencies and are not tolled.
the toll booth pic gives an impression that all entry/exit points will be thru toll booths only - is that so?
also, electronic toll collection systems are very expensive and are usually operated/managed by a third party, so the cost could distributed - would it be feasible for the 45KM ITEway project?

Phase 1 (Madhya Kailash to Siruseri )will have 6 main lanes + service road + nmv lanes

Phase 2 (Siruseri to Mamallapuram) will probably have 8 main lain lanes + service and nmv lanes.

As far as i know, an elevated interchange at Madhya kailash Jn has been proposed and design has been submitted to the govt.

A vehicular underpass at Thiruvanmiyur Road Junction as been proposed, Besides, four or five pedestrian subways are also being planned

How about canal accesibility ? Is there some beutification plans for the stretch of land between the highway and the canals ? The article mentions roadside greenery but does it include the stretch up to the canal ? whome does this land belong to ?

I think the canal will be beautified only upto 3 kms from Madhya Kailash Jn. I believe that the land belongs to the state govt, cos TN govt gave land for the MRTS project along the canal.

Detailed Project report is under govt consideration. No time limit has been fixed for its completion.

Btw, TNRDC has completed the preparation of detailed feasibility report for improving the Coimbatore Avinashi Road to world-class facility and implementation strategy is being finalized.

Its sad to see these big construction cos still relying upon manual labor with their rudimentary tools rather than utilizing modern equipments.

I think TN govt carried out this demolition. Except for enchroachment demolition drive, i havent seen the govt usinge mahinery for demolition..Few years ago the govt demolished many buildings which violated the rules, all the buildings where demolished manually, including hige rise buildings.

Wow! What an artistic IT Expressway!

So we have a couple of art gallery owners, two from the College of Arts and Craft, some from Cholamandal Artists village and so on,” says Ashvin.

The mandate to the artists was simple. There should be no nudity or sexual content. Eschewing the temptation of recreating the existing works of the artists, they were asked to create something new and original for the project. The creations should not have any religious or political overtones.

“We took pains to see that even combination of colours that could be seen to represent any political party—AIADMK, DMK or even the BJP—was avoided,” Ashvin says.

The artists selected also responded enthusiastically. While some worked directly on the walls of the institutions along the Expressway, others created their works in their studios and then transferred them to the walls.

“This was an entirely new and exciting experience for me. It provided me an opportunity to work with some talented people and create,” says Asma Menon, whose mural ‘Mother and Child’ adorns one of the walls.

As these works will be exposed not only to the elements but also the emissions of the vehicles plying on the expressway, care has also be taken to use material which would withstand the rigours for at least 10 years.

Of course, there is an element of maintenance and probably restoration after a few years. But this issue has also been factored in by the TNRDC,” says Ashvin.

Even the wall of one of the buildings of the Central Polytechnic, which would have stuck out like a sore thumb amidst the newly constructed compound wall of the various institutions, has been converted into a canvas for artistic expression, with Selvakumar, a talented student of the College of Arts and Craft, allowed to do a huge painting that merges with the scene.

The works of art will be formally unveiled when the Madhya Kailash-TIDEL Park segment is officially dedicated to the state by the end of the month.
