There is a very nice night shot of the IT expressway in Oct13 edition of Hindu. It shows the newly installed lights on the median with Tidel Park in the backdrop.

Are they planning to put more trees in the median like that one huge tree we see in the picture? That would look really good as well as obviously reduce the air pollution levels, what with some heavy flow of traffic expected in that region.

Nice pics Ferari. It is great that the project ( for the benefit of all ) has picked up momentum and hopefully phase 1 should be completed in the next 6-8 months.
One question - the 2km stretch from MK to Tidel park - is it actually 6+2 lanes ? Does not seem too broad from the pics....

Is it like 3 lanes will sandwich the metro line in the middle or is it running parallel? Are there any stations on the IT way and what is the plan for them?

The metro elevated line is on the left side ( if you enter the IT expressway from Madhya Kailash). The metro terminates at Velachary barely two km into the expressway.
Currently there is no metro connection ( besides three stations along the 2km common route) along the IT corridor

Thanks ferrari_fan for the pics. While taking those pictures did you get a feeling that they'd finish the initial stretch by the end of october. Are they using small patio blocks for Access and NMV lanes? I may be wrong, but I think it will take a long time to level and lay those.

Looks excellent.
I wonder how they have planned to enforce cleanliness.
Moreover they have to reroute the garbage trucks from plying through this expressway to the perungudi dumping yard and also allot timings for trucks from using this stretch.
i feel that the pedestrian footpaths should be overhead ratherthan underground at all important places to prevent antisocial activities and flooding.
They can always put the sign boards on these overhead footpaths.
Are they planning to have any footpaths from the MRTS station to the other side?
Also lane discipline should be enforced. It is just not enough to have a world class raod without any traffic sense.

thanks for the pics Ferrari and Magestom

To be honest this project ( as it stands ) simply doesn't live up to its expectations and the wide publicity around it. To me it doesnt look any better than the Marina or Mount Rd. And it wil be a cardinal sin if they are going to let sand in the road like what the pics suggest now.

I hope its all because its still incomplete and work is in progress and the finished product will be a lot better... otherwise this will be a major disapopintment

a few months ago i had the same worry.. but, now it definitely does seem to be 6+2 as promised..

the stretches i've posted pics of so far still have landscaping going on, so there's plenty of mud being transported, and so the road appears narrower than it actually is.. once complete, this is without doubt going to be TN's best stretch of road..

the current plan is to complete the initial 3km stretch, just to relieve a little of the frustration that's built up because of the slowness of progress of this project..

and even in this 3km stretch, only the main 6 lanes are scheduled to be completed, and the patio-bricked service lanes are only due for completion a month later, by which time i expect they will in fact be layed..

i completely agree with everything you've said..

in particular, i'm really worried about lane discipline.. in spite of 3 lanes each way, people don't understand that once they've overtaken, they're supposed to return to the middle lane, so the next guy can pass..

without strict enforcement of lane discipline, even an 8-lane road is insufficient for a road with this level of traffic..

hey keep your chin up man..

trust me - when (if?) it's completed in May 07, this will probably be the best stretch of road in all of south India, and will remain so until HYD's ORR, BMIC and B'lore-Hosur Expy get completed..

the sand is because mud is still being dumped for construction work and landscaping, and of course there's sand being transported to the gazillion tech park construction sites down the road.. it's not going to be squeaky clean for a while to come, but it definitely won't remain the way it is now for long..

and as for Mt rd and tha Marina, ITE is quite simply in a different league - it's like comparing Chennai and Singapore ( which funnily enough some people actually do! )

cheers..

some more pics - in this section, lanes have been marked, and most tree-planting work is completed, so these should give you all a better idea of the finished product..

streetside images of chennai life..
