I trust you

I think the lowest temperature I ever experienced was -18°C in Livigno when I was a kid (possibly around 1988 or so). Recently (4 years ago) a -12°C in München 2 years ago and a -15°C in Bologna 4 years ago.

Regarding this thread: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1553231

How is the condition on the austrian motorways? Has it become a profitable motorway or is it collecting the cost to build it/invest in new roads.

I find it interesting that the tolls does not seem to get lower over the years. I am talking about the famous vingette you buy.

It also interesting that a country like germany does not charge for road tolls(not directly), if it did it would probably finance new roads in seconds....

My car showed an ambient temperature of -33C in Lithuania about 9 or 10 years ago. I remember letting it warm up for 30 minutes before driving. It took that long for the coolant temperature to rise to 70C.

Some people have to light fires underneath the engine in Siberia to get it started.

General condition is quite good imo and that famous Vignette is far from profitable, not even if every single Austrian would buy one.

Well, the Austrian motorway system is still in the process of being expanded. And the requirements, especially for environmental protection, make a new-built motorway much more expensive than it would have been 40 years ago. Thus, the money is desperately needed.

An additional problem of the Austrian federal motorway company is its history: Asfinag was founded in 1984 by the Austrian government for the execution of its motorway building projects. It then did not have any income, only the expenditure of building the motorway system - thus, in 1997 when the vignette was introduced, they had a HUGE mountain of debt on their books. And nobody seems to remember that most of Asfinag's debt was actually acquired masquerading federal deficit by outsourcing it to a pseudo-company - now they are pressed to get rid of this debt. If you would make a new calculation starting in 1997, removing the interest they had to pay on the debt taken on before and use only income vs operational expenditure, they would actually be profitable and the toll prices could come down. Alas, that's not the case thus the vignette prices are here to stay. Compared to Italy or France we still get our motorways for a bargain and at least the tolls are used for the expansion and maintenance of the expressway system.

Austrian vignettes are cheap. I guess they are less than 1% of the cost of driving.

Only -10° C. for me.
But it was enough ! I'm not used to these low temperatures.
And the more surprising was the place : Albacete, in the south-east of Spain with 20 cm of snow. Three years ago, in december 2009.
Impossible to sleep in my van. Hotel compulsory!

Only a quarter of ASFiNAG income is from vignettes. ¾ is from truck tolling, at € 1.1 billion per year.

What is the best route driving from Vienna to Graz? I see 2 possible routes. What are the differences? Toll or anything maybe?
I consider them both for hin und zurück
Are there special things this time of the year?

S6 is probably more scenic than A2.

No difference in tolls as you still need a vignette for expressways (S6, S35). I drove both (without S35 though) and indeed S6+S35 is more spectacular but also A2 is not a boring drive.
