There are ducts with fresh and exhaust air, with regular openings (without fans) on the ceiling leading to the traffic area. Fans are placed at portals or at underground ventilation stations linked tot he surface with two ducts (fresh/exhaust air).

Sometimes the fresh air duct is under the carriageway (with only one duct above), but usually fresh air is throw in at wheel level.

For road tunnels, you have three different types of ventilation:
  • Axial ventilation: usually round tunnel cross section with large ventilators mounted to the ceiling or the walls. Air is sucked in at one portal and blown out on the other side. This is especially suitable for shorter tunnels with directional traffic. One example in Austria would be the Amberg tunnel on A14.
  • Semi cross-sectional ventilation: rectangular tunnel cross section with a used-air exhaust line above the driving tunnel. Air is sucked in at the portal, then passes through ventilation openings into the exhaust tunnel above the driving space and is blown out through ventilation buildings, usually above the portals. Used in medium-length tunnels. This is used for instance at the Roppener tunnel on A12.
  • Cross-sectional ventilation: two air tunnels above or below the driving tunnel. One delivers fresh air to the tunnel, the other one is used for exhaust. Ventilation usually occurs through ventilation buildings either at the portal or at vertical ventilation shafts. Used in longer tunnels and high-traffic tunnels, e.g., at Pfänder tunnel or Arlberg tunnel. In some single-tube tunnels, the fresh-air duct was, or is planned to being, adapted as an escape tunnel (San Bernardino, Arlberg).

I've drawn a small explanatory scheme below. Green arrows mean fresh air, red arrows exhaust air.

IIRC at least one of the shorter A10 tunnels between Pass Lueg and junction Pongau is using this type of ventilation.

A23 Wien

Roadworks on A23 in Wien using a temporary bridge structure over the work zone, so no lane closures are needed. They will replace the expansion joints of the bridge.

Perhaps this is a nice feature for Germany, where they closed the A52 bridge south of Essen for 3 months to all traffic to replace the expansion joints.

It's called fly-over bridge. IIRC an invention by the city of Vienna.

I gotta admit I admire it. But did not building of such structure require closure of any lanes? Or was it some kind of monolithic construction built outside the roadwork site and quickly installed e.g. by crane?

A modular construction could be erected during a nightshift or a weekend.

It's usually installed at night, when traffic is scarce. One lane will always be free during the construction.

A9 Bosrucktunnel

An opening ceremony of the second tube of the Bosruck Tunnel (5.5 km) will be held on July 19. The second tube will open to traffic shortly thereafter. When the second tube is put into service, the old tube will shut down for 2 years for renovation works. Full 2x2 capacity is expected in 2015. Project cost is € 280 million.
