The sequential numbers like A8-A9, A10-A11, A14-S16-A12, and the splitting in two categories of what are basically all motorways in a small country are quite annoying, IMHO, but I suppose it will remain like that for a long time.

15-km queue in front of the Karawankentunnel today. That means almost to Villach.

Summer habit there. Summer traffic jams moved there from Tauerntunnel. I like the attracting detour Villach - A23 - A/IT in Thörl-Maglern - A23 - Tarvisio - SS54 - Rateče (SLO) - Kranjska Gora - Jesenice.....It might be the option....

That's appropriate even for caravans.

I like that piece of the Alpine countryside....No toll gates, no border checks (3 countries in few minutes!), and no steep road as at Koren sedlo/Wurzenpass.....

I think it's too far from the Tauern Tunnel to have any significant impact on the Karawanken Tunnel. I think increased traffic to Croatia is a major factor, many people go there nowadays with the "Yugoslavia" image further and further in history.

A similar observation can be made in Switzerland. Despite heavy congestion at the Gotthard Tunnel, there is still significant congestion downstream at the Italian border near Chiasso / Como. The effect of tunnel metering is less once you get farther away from it.

It was about the war and its consequences, not Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia had an adequate tourist infrastructure and was visited by many foreign tourists. Their number in Croatia in 1990 (and even in Slovenia, which hardly had a war) was reached again only recently.

[QUOTE=ChrisZwolle;105629711]I think it's too far from the Tauern Tunnel to have any significant impact on the Karawanken Tunnel. I think increased traffic to Croatia is a major factor, many people go there nowadays with the "Yugoslavia" image further and further in history.

I mean that there are 2-tubes-tunnels (Tauern, Katschberg) and the bottleneck at A10/A11.at has moved towards still single tube Karawankentunnel with toll gate. In spite of the fact that part of summer (tourist) traffic continues to Italy via Tarvisio avoiding Karawankentunnel.
It is the issue of the summer season peak time and the key transit routes in Alps....

it's possible, SS54 gets quite narrow and curvy near Tarvisio though. Ljubelj route is also an option (when Austrians fix their part)

You are right. Quite narrow behind Trbiž/Tarvisio. That is attracting option (anyway I drove it even by coach more times). With opportunity to discover Planica and Kranjska Gora. More comfortable than Koren sedlo, it sound like a circle route round Tromeja

Ljubelj (tunnel, not the closed old road) is certainly the option, it is curvy (but very nice valley) on the Austrian side (Klein-Loibl etc.), with quite fast road on the Slovenian side of the border. First of all if I consider the route via Seebergsattel and Jezersko. I could have dreamt about curvy route there......

So my conclusion in the pas was as follows:
a)Karawankentunnel - option: Tarvisio - Kranjska Gora (or even Koren sedlo)
b)Graz - Sentilj - Maribor - Ljubljana - option: Klagenfurt and Ljubelj (tunnel)
