That's because "Schnellstraße" sounds somehow better in people's ears than Autobahn. If they hear Autobahn, they think of "transit-hell"

This alignment is perfect for the suburban/agglomeration traffic, but not for the transit traffic.
Austrians in general don't like transit-traffic, so maybe that's why

If you take B320 passing Schladming it is only 20 km longer, but I don't know the condition of that B-road (all directions include bypassing Salzburg)

Tunnel tolls on A10 and A11 are pretty expensive and therefore not very attractive on cost side.
B320 road is a pain in the ass, at the last section from Trautenfels to Liezen you have a 70km/h limit as long as 20 kms

I like to draw proposals... :-)

here is another one:

This is the official middle-term (-2020) network expansion plan of Austria:

But what about the S31?
Won't it be extended to A4?

It is absolutly necessary for the Bratislava/Budapest <-> Graz/Klagenfort/Italy traffic to bypass Wien on a shorter route...

That would be definitely great connection. Relatively short motorway which will save a lot of time and money. But, I think after never-ending A6 construction we can expect this one after let's say 20 years, not sooner...

That would be nice connection, although it wouldn't have much to do with Budapest, but Bratislava. And I thought the third motorway/expressway to Slovenia was already official.

How do you mean that "it wouldn't have much to do with Budapest"?

That is a longer, but faster route, than the direct route on the crowded hungarian main road #8:

Maybe there will be other projects.
But currently that's all.

^ They also forgot the second link to Bratislava.

About Budapest: true, but by the time your proposal gets built, there will be Austrian S7 expressway and the one in Hungary too, except if you think your proposal is urgent. But even if so, this year the Budapest-Maribor(-Ljubljana) motorway opens, so it will definitely be shorter even for someone coming from Graz, let alone Italy.

The map is outdated.
I've made this one:

Green are all the additional projects for the outdated map
Pink are the projects that were planned in the first version of the still valid "Federal roads law 1971" (Bundesstraßengesetz 1971)

That connection was formerly planned as S4 "Eisenstädter Schnellstraße" all the way from Wiener Neustadt to Neusiedl am See.
But then people were afraid of "transit-hell" and now the project is stopped as so many others as you can see on my updated map.

Sorry, but I've never heard of that, although I'd like it.
I suppose you mean a motorway/expressway from ~Völkermarkt/Velikovec via Bleiburg/Pliberk or Lavamünd/Labot towards Dravograd/Unterdrauburg?

If Hungarians can build their M7 in immediate proximity of Balaton, why Austrians cannot do the same near Neusiedlersee?

greenies here, greenies there, greenies everywhere...

what harm could a motorway (next to the railway) do to this lake?

(greenies protect the nature. who protects the humans?)

Yes, but this motorway would be furhter from the lake and next to railway as H123Laci mentioned.

If they really don't want to build it next to Neusidlersee they can build something like this. It will help a lot as well, although not as H123Laci's proposal: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...a4fe28c3da40ad
