Sorry, I already found the press release yesterday evening. It was not yet online at 2PM but 7PM when I checked the ASFINAG site again.

Thank you!

It seems my usual filling place in Mureck is just as cheap as in Graz, so no point diverting

Still

I measured it last time and it took 55 minutes from the start of the A4 in Ptuj to the Spielfeld junction on the Austrian A9. Google thinks that it should take about 35 minutes from Spielfeld to Ptuj on Slovenian motorways, so - add 5-10 minutes to buy and stick on a Slovenian vignette, and the time difference is minimal

Video vignette

The Minister of Transport announced that it will be possible to buy the vignette online from 2018. The number plates of cars will be checked by the existing camera system for trucks. Investment costs: 12 million €. No sticker needed anymore!

Good idea, but 2018 is far from now, so sad that they couldn't make it faster...

Nooooooooo. I hate electronic vignettes!

(on the good side, it means one less vignette for my wife to put in a stupid place )

Electronic vignettes are to be rejected on a privacy level already. I don't want to give the government the possibility to create movement patterns about me and an electronic vignette is a great way to achieve this.

This paranoia about movement patterns is really backward. Still everybody owns a smartphone and that enables a complete movement pattern creation.

If you don't want to be seen by others don't go out of the house and don't use the Internet...

That is really paranoic

There are a lot of traffic cameras right now on Austrian and European roads. Do you think that you need a e-vignette for the cameras to see your licence plate? And who cares where you or I are driving?

The electronic vignette is a lot better. You don't have to get a collection of stickers on your windscreen, almost impossible to remove without trying really hard.

Not even a smartphone. A normal dumbphone will do the job nicely via triangulation. As I recall, you can get down to around 20m easily and consistently with a normal GSM phone.

I hate electronic vignettes for the sole reason that I like to be reminded of where I've been

Still, it would be nice if some of these vignette-using countries could build some sort of drive-through vignette-buying structure (like on the M1 in Hungary) instead of having to get out of the car.

Any standard traffic safety camera has capabilities of collecting imagery that can be easily read with OCR systems and track cars. The government also has car registration files.

If one is to fret about electronic tolling or vignettes, better argue that car plates should be phased out altogether.

I'm planning my summer vacations in Osttirol, and I have some questions about Felbertauernstrasse. I understand it is a tolled road, but I didn't understand which part and where to pay. Is the toll booth only at the southern end of the tunnel? If I want to go from, say, Matrei to Gschlößtal do I have to pay something?
More, is the Gschlößtal road open for regular traffic?

Thanks for your answers.

IIRC you have to pay directly after the tunnel when you come from Salzburg. So yes, you should be fine as long as you don't go through the tunnel.

Die Straße führt zwar weiter bis hinter die Siedlung Innergschlöß, ab dem Matreier Tauernhaus besteht jedoch ein Fahrverbot
