Typical German/Austrian

Hungary and Slovakia don't have this 18-day waiting period, right? If you buy it with a validity starting today, it can be used immediately.

In Hungary or Romania you can buy it with validity starting from time of purchase.

For Hungary I buy a vignette almost every month. Every time I buy it online on the day of travel or maximum one day before.

Isnt buying it every month a waste of money? You should try our county vignettes -in case you always drive the same route through Hungary.

some info in German: http://oesterreich.orf.at/stories/2833679/
Which is bs. You are not entering a contract with ASFINAG to use the Autobahn. Your obligation to pay toll derives from the law directly. Since only contractual obligations are subject to the right to withdraw the consumer protection directive is not applicable here. Stupid better safe than sorry mentality.

As mentioned above, paying toll is not a consumer contract, therefore no consumer protection is applicable. If there was no possibility to return the vignette, it would be completely in accordance with EU consumer protection directives. In other words, there is no need at all to corrupt whole system like this.

This really makes the digital vignette useless, except for the yearly one.. anything else you would not likely buy that much in advance..

And I also don't understand the applicability of the law here - why does it work anyhow then to buy anything like movie tickets online? or other entrance tickets for something?

Those can be returned for 14 days up to the point when you started consuming the service like going to the movies.

See § 18 Abs 1 FAGG: https://www.ris.bka.gv.at/GeltendeFa...ummer=20008847

Could't be the same with online vignette? You can return/cancel it up to the day before its validity starts. For example if buy it 2 days in advance, you have 2 days to change your mind.

Meanwhile, ASFINAG is announcing that the construction of the S3 between Hollabrunn and Guntersdorf (see http://www.asfinag.at/unterwegs/baup...93-guntersdorf for all details) will be started in June, with an expected completion around the end of 2019 / beginning of 2020.

This is an extension of the existing S3 from Knoten Stockerau until Hollabrunn, and will be built, as most of the existing road (see http://www.openstreetmap.org/relatio...8.4633/16.1370 for a map), as an alternating 2+1.
The new road can be seen also here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/relatio...8.6443/16.1228

With this extension, you will have only one roundabout left (close to Jetzelsdorf, http://www.openstreetmap.org/relatio...8.7043/16.0594) between the A22 from Vienna, and the Czech border.

Still, we are many years away from having a continous motorway connection Vienna-Prague, even with the A5 extension being finalised in Austria there is a part only as a 1+1 road, and also around Mikulov in Czechia, a national road is yet to be upgraded..
But hey, it's only 27,5 years since the fall of the iron curtain :-)

Interesting, the A4 to Hungary was completed already in 1994.

But there is quite a lot of traffic on this section. Every time when I drive there, all traffic goes with 90-120 km/h on both lanes... so you are always stuck in a moving mass of cars, unable to drive as quickly as you would like.

If I am not mistaken, they will start soon to widen A4 from Vienna Airport until Parndorf to 3+3 lanes.

True, I forgot about the one north of Jetzelsdorf, and then there's indeed also a new one at the new terminus, Guntersdorf.. Still, quite ok :-)

Some preparation work has started this year, e.g. bridge works at the Fischamend exit, and at some rest areas. Major work will be starting 2018, and will last until 2023 (in two stages, Fischamend - Bruck, and then Bruck towards Neusiedl/Parndorf). You can find details here: http://www.asfinag.at/unterwegs/baup...amend-neusiedl

The widening is the blue "Schritt 4", currently also the last renovation works for the segment Neusiedl-Border are under way (Schritt 3, Phase 3), in red.

Today, 19 of April, when we should prepare for summer, A21 motorway (Vienna bypass), A1 motorway between Vienna and St. Pölten as well as the minor roads around are all closed due to heavy snowfall.

Current traffic conditions on Google Maps:

Statement from ASFiNAG (in German).

Wow, that's quite the situation. I think this is quite unusual even in the dead of winter?

Almost all my work colleagues (both Romanian and Austrian) have already changed the car tyres with summer ones. Nobody expected such harsh winter so late in April.

You may get a dusting or so in April, but I've read about widespread 20-30 cm of snow from Poland into the Western Balkans, even up to a meter higher in the Austrian Alps.

I wouldn't call this unusual for April, and not a harsh weather either!

- Temperatures are not unusually or extremely low for this month. In most places they are a few degrees plus. For example, last year, we had overnight temperatures below zero in the last week of April..
It was just a relatively high amount of precipitation during this lower temperatures today, which caused the main issue.

- Also, these events on A21 are nothing unusual, it is constantly causing this sort of problems, because
  • it has relatively steep inclines (4 sections with 4.5-5%)
  • it is also relatively elevated, up to 550 above sea level
  • it is the connection from the A1 (Westautobahn, from Salzburg) to A4 (Ostautobahn towards towards Budapest, both of which are transit routes for truck drivers that do not expect this almost mountainous motorway section, and always get surprised..
Really, basically every year on first snowfall, A21 will be blocked..

Part of that motorway was planned as Reichsautobahn, and some of that initial alignment has been kept, which explains the inadequate standard..

- An unlucky event is likely that the compulsory winter tyre season ended on April 15th, and that we had >20° already early April, which likely causes people to change back to summer tires.
