OK, but it's like saying a 6-members family can live in 30m flat

The thing is it was not congested ever day.

It is really a mystery for me why the S1 wasn't built 2x3 from the very beginning. The current situation seems like very bad planning to me. Vienna is not only a big capital city, but also one of the busiest transit nodes in Europe.

I have a question about A9: they are putting new electronic info boards from Leibnitz to Graz, on the begining they are made for two lanes in each directions, but from Wildon to graz have option for upgrading for 3 lanes in each directions! Are they planing to built 2x3 from Wildon to Graz in future?

I don't see how 2x3 on S1 would solve all the problems. 3x3 would make more sense, I guess?

The correct term is 2x3 I believe for 6 lanes. 3x3 = 9 lanes divided over 3 carriageways, very unusual.

Oh, sorry - slight mix-up in terminology. My bad. What I meant was 2/3.

Yes, I was referring to 2x3 = 2*3 = 3+3 = 6 lanes. I like to think of "x" as a lane multiplication sign.

The most mistakes I've seen here;

3x3 / 4x4 when 2x3 or 2x4 is meant
Highway when a motorway is meant
Stoplight when a traffic light is meant
2x3 when 2x2 + shoulders are meant

Nothing serious, but many people in Europe think a "highway" exclusively means "motorway" or "autobahn", which is not true. It can be any type of public road. This mistake also happens often on wikipedia.

And elsewhere even more. At least there are Brits and the Irish speaking proper English in Europe.

In a country that's just spent several billion € to save local banks, here'd be more money than enough to build second bypass - it's just the nimbies that oppose such plans.

Saving the banks is one thing coz the losses would be even grater and building bypasses is another.
Big portion of Austrias GDP is financial sector and if it goes down that would have catastrophic consequences on Austria´s standard of living and way of life. And the government knows that.

Yes, but apparently there is money. What was all this money waiting for before the crisis? To end up in pockets of individuals, I suppose. We've seen tremendous amounts of money in the West lately.

Yeah, somehow, the Dutch government did manage to get € 20+ billion somewhere while there's a total budget of € 160 billion a year. Normally it's difficult to get a couple of billions in a decade extra for transportation (three quarters of which will end up in public transport megalomanic projects).

No money for schools, welfare, infrastructure, etc... All of a sudden it appears out of nowhere.

And we're talking about billions. Big European countries even managed to find more than a trillion euros to fight the crisis.
