The first motorway A1 from Vienna to Germany was built few years before the WW2 started, during the Nazi rule in Austria.

Yeah, it also lives in the Netherlands. It used to be the only poisonous animal living in the Netherlands, which poison is really dangerous. However, the black widow is feeling at home over here as well, so we have new dangers over here. Too bad. I hate spiders

Last two times I went in woods, I saw snakes, so I'm not sure when a third time will come.

Slovenia has lots of forests (65% ) so there's lots of room for them to live. In the Netherlands that's not the case, because everything is too regulated here.

Lethal snakes in Europe are not quite forest snakes. And even other are rather to be found on open, grassy or rocky areas.

Haha. Lethal snakes in Europe? Are you guys serious?

For a healthy person the bite of a vipera berus is about as dangerous as a bee sting. Of course, even a bee sting can become life threatening when there's an allergic reaction.

Because of lots of trade with the US, black widow spiders get carried accross the ocean, and settle in the Netherlands, for example. I'm scared to death of spiders, I really don't like the idea of such animals being here

ok, you're right about Vipera Berus, you really must be unlucky to die of its bite. youjust get sick for few days and it hurts.

but Vipera Ammodytes is much more dangerous player. not as cobras or rattlesnakes, but you are really in shitty situation if it bites you

True, but I still wouldn't call it a lethal snake. Even rattlesnake bites are hardly ever fatal. Needless to say, I'd steer clear of both.

I think escaped exotic snakes/spiders/scorpions held illegally by people who don't know what they're doing, pose a much greater risk. And that was my first thought, when I saw the picture of the sign above.

Lol, you're right. I'm sorry.

Here's a picture I shot on the A21, just south of Vienna. On a clear day you get a breathtaking view of the entire city. Too bad I don't have any other pics.

Instead of motorways, here are a few photos of scenic highways and backcountry roads. Since that's the only thread about Austria I could find and others have done the same, I decided to post them here.

The photos are from 3-4 different trips over the last couple of years, in no particular order, and were shot with different cameras, which explains the variations in quality. I also can't pinpoint the exact location of most pics, so I didn't even try.

Enjoy!

what is the traffic like at A21? i have never understood it completely because its beginning is so much at west, or if it begins there, why is at opposite side ending in Vösendorf, and not more at south in Guntramsdorf.

Average.

I don't understand it either. It's pointless. I also don't get why S1 joins A4 north of the airport. A4 beween Vienna and the airport was busy as it was, even before S1 was completed. Now we've got additional unnecessary traffic beween Schwechat interchange and the airport.

@snowman: Thanks for the gorgeous pictures! The mountain roads really make me wanna go for a roadtrip again!
