#9 is definitely not Paulitschsattel. I've never even heard of it before. I'm pretty sure it's Sölkpaß.

It will be reconstructed on the same path it is now, so it is more or less a general renovation which includes tearing away the old carriageways. But tearing away part of A23 probably sounds more sensational to the papers...

I don't understand it either. It's pointless. I also don't get why S1 joins A4 north of the airport. A4 beween Vienna and the airport was busy as it was, even before S1 was completed. Now we've got additional unnecessary traffic beween Schwechat interchange and the airport.

@snowman: Thanks for the gorgeous pictures! The mountain roads really make me wanna go for a roadtrip again!
A S1 routing with crossing of Danube river at Fischamend, east of Schwechat, was investigated but discarded as the impact on the whole traffic situation was worse than on the Vösendorf-Schwechat routing.

And a point to the signage on S1: the missing of "Wien" on the signs westbound approaching Vösendorf seems to be disturbing first. On the other hand, people unfamiliar with the area will be guided to Vienna on A4 through Schwechat interchange, and the "fine distribution" managed via A23/A22 and local roads. Secondly, Altmannsdorf and Favoriten are written in italics, which is the Austrian norm for city-internal destinations. And everyone should be aware that he is near Vienna when driving on S1 .

Interesting observations! Will have to make up my mind about them.

yeah, something like that makes much more sense indeed but anyway, i don't understand why have they made A1-A21 so far at west. i think that much more sense would make A1-A21 intersection about 10 km to east, around Preßbaum, and exit at A4 just next to Schwechat. like this:

I think it's because of difficult terrain on the south-west of Wien. Have you ever drove the A21? Sometimes I feel like on some rollercoaster there

Not really. The project descriptions can be found here for the southeastern part (Schwechat-Süssenbrunn) and here for the part under construction (Süssenbrunn-Korneuburg).

However, I do not think that the traffic density justifies a second motorway ring around Vienna. The intersection A21/A1 at Steinhäusl is probably that far to the west because of the difficult terrain in the Wienerwald mountainous region there.

Nope, unfortunately not.
Down here, infrastructure projects are as popular as nuclear powerplants.

Well, at least infrastructure is used after building it. Not being the biggest friend of nuclear power, the Austrian way was just ridiculous.

So, enough off-topic .

I am Austrian, that means I can make fun of Austrians whenever I like (can it be possible that I have seen your old user name on airliners.net?).

That's very likely! I'm still active over there.

What I meant is that the Austrian population didn't agree with anuclear powerplant from the very beginning, so the hilarious part was Kreisky's fault (who always supported nuclear energy). And everyone's always entitled to make fun of Austrians, btw.

Snow chaos in southern Austria, I've read. Up to two meters of fresh snow caused roads and railways to be closed.

That's in the valley and that just in 2-3 days. In hills there is much more snow, 3-5 metres altogether.

Can the Austrian toll vignette be bought at all motorway border crossings?
