A9 Pyhrnautobahn: Voralpenkreuz - Graz

Click on the title to view the full set.

I took a different route to Slovenia, the A9 or Pyhrnautobahn, which is the easternmost cross-Alpine motorway in the Alps. It includes two toll tunnels, the Bosrücktunnel and Gleinalmtunnel, and the longest tunnel, around the city of Graz, is toll free. This route is approximatly 190 kilometers long.

Damn, how many Pevec trucks are there? You spotted one also by Maribor, if you look closely. Awesome motorway. I haven't driven all of A9 yet.

pre-last

i saw 8 of them in SLO/A at my last trip to Bruck. and usually if you travel for instance from Varaždin to Karlovac, you will see them at least 15 each time. sometimes i catch them 25 from Zagreb to Karlovac. btw, this last one (tandem) is under my conducting

i passed whole A9 once in a bus and it is really fantastic! the only bad thing is lack of service areas

Yeah, to my recollection, there are only 3 or 4 on the 190 kilometers from the Voralpenkreuz to Graz. Maybe they don't need more gas stations, but some more rest areas would be nice. I think an interval of 15 km between parking possibilities is nice, and 30 - 50 km for gas stations, depending on traffic volumes.

I agree. On some A or S roads there are too few rest areas, and many of the existing parking areas were closed down. When I'm driving long distances I usually drive until I feel tired, pull into a rest area and take a quick 1h nap. It's very annoying (and also safety problem) when want to take a brake and there's nowhere to stop, you have to keep going and going.... Of course, it varies from Autobahn to Autobahn

Scandinavia is a great example of how it should be done, btw.

2X2 and 3x3 lanes notorways Austria has i guess; do you have 4x4 lane motorways or even sections of an motorway?

There is 2X4 configuration of A2 south of Vienna for about 20 km.
I think, this is all.

2x4 sections:

A23 in Vienna between Gürtel interchange and A22
A2 between Vienna and Baden (longest continuous stretch)
A1 between A7 and A25 (very short)

That's all I can think of. There are 2x4 sections on the A22, but not 4 through-lanes (rightmost lane acts as a long on and offramp).

Local, regional and main roads are full of those signs. Luckily there are none on motorways.

They are also very poorly lit at night.

I was not sure about western Slovenia but in eastern Slovenia Austrian names are usually monolingual, but Hungarian bilingual.

I've seen bilingual signs all over Slovenia (non-motorway/expressway roads), but than again, I didn't go to the eastern part of the country

before Hungarian Boarder they are in German, hungarian and (WONDER WHY) ITALIAN

btw: i think 2lingual signs are nonsense
Llublijana ist Llublijana and NOT Laibach (for me)
when i want to go to Maribor i should keep my eyes on maribor (and not Marburg)

just MY OPINION

(except the complete system changes, like ex. Kyrilian in Ukraine, ...)

Video: A9 Pyhrn Autobahn

I taped a section of the Pyhrn Autobahn, from the St Pankraz rest area to the Bosrücktunnel. (crossing the main chain of the eastern Alps).

Watch it in HD on youtube or below.

Do You have any information on when will A5 and S1 be finished? I mean the lenghts that are currently U/C.

The asfinaq site gives only beginning/end of the year. Maybe someone would be able to specify the month.

I drove using B7 to Wien and was very surprised with how much has already been done.

A2 Graz - Klagenfurt

Click on the title to view the full set.

A drive on the westbound A2 from the city of Graz to the city of Klagenfurt. When I drove there, the road was not very busy, with a lot of Italians.
