i don´t understand Austrian logic designation of the road is S, but it has motorway sign and has motorways profile, why it doesn´t have designation A.

don´think the font itself is a problem. Too many destinations, too many ovals, confusing placement, use of italic makes everything chaotic.

Who said Slovakia was signed over B8?

Traffic for Slovakia might be minor here, but if they already have it on the S1-A5 junction, they should also sign it later.

Anyway, as I can see, the S2 isn't completely finished yet; when is it supposed to be?

To fool NIMBYs.

An S-road is a "Schnellstrasse" or expressway in English. They can have tighter alignment than A-roads, typically with more exits, more narrow lanes and lower speed limits. Most drivers without this knowledge won't notice the difference anyway.

In the past 10 years, expressways have become quite popular as an alternative to the politically difficult motorways throughout Europe.

Never mind, in December.

I don't think there's any other reason. If S1 wasn't up to motorway standards, it wouldn't be signed as a motorway. I don't see a difference between S1 and A1 either. But of course some motorways are wider and straighter than others, they can't be all the same.

No one.

Also I thought that Morava is much wider river. At least when I saw it up close, it was few times wider, maybe there were really some floods that time.

Austrian signage is mostly OK, but aroud Wien it is really horrible, even I almost missed exit because of too many destinations on one sign.

It wouldn't surprise me if idiotic political motives are (at least in part) responsible for that terrible sign clutter.

The new signs in Slovakia look so much better (except, maybe they could lose the E-road numbers):

Imagine the additional mess, if Austrians added E-roads to all their signs.

Not all letters are capital and font will be changed next year.

Will the interchanges along the S2 be numbered when the construction is completed? If so, what will the numbers be?

How about the other schnellstrassen? Besides the S1, S5, S33, and S37 (where I can find interchange numbers on Google Maps without visiting Austria), are the interchanges numbered or planned to be numbered as the autobahnen are?

i think that if they have numbers it is like on Autobahns km number from Vienna is the number of exit.

I'm looking for the interchange numbers for a project I'm working on.

Sometimes the km value is one off from the interchange number due to rounding or estimating. The relevant pages of the Motorway Exits and Wikipedia sites show numbers for junctions, but it's not clear if they are distances or a posted junction number. So basically I have a list of numbers and I don't know if they are correct or if some are off by 1.

it usual in austria to count the interchangenumber with the distance to the origin of the autobahn/schnellstraße, ed. the origin of the a12 is at the border kiefersfelden/kufstein. the interchange kufstein nord has the number 2 because of the kilometer 2.
