I agree. A driver would probably have to stop to find her own language. I think the local language plus English suffices. In bilingual areas, the two local languages plus English suffice.

I imagine it's meant to be decorative rather than informative....

But I like knowing that sort of thing (foreign versions of exotic place names) and I wish the sign were bigger so I could read it. If I were actually there, I might pull over and stop to read it. And I'd guess I wouldn't be the first person to ever do so.

Great pics Schwarzpunkt. And a big thank you! I might be using almost the entire E66 in Austria very soon and now I know how it looks like.

Which was the average speed you traveled on E66 from A10 autobahn to the Italian border?

I traveled on E66 twice and the average speed of the non-motorway section is about 70-75km/h. The road has some bypasses, and is very nice to drive.

I agree.
The only slow section (average speed = 50 km / h) is between Greifenburg and Oberdrauburg ( 20 km - map), where the villages don't have bypass and the road is narrow (sorry, I don't have pics) . And, of course, the crossing of Lienz. Otherwise you can consider 80 to 100 km / h.

It's nice though. I like a bit of humor on the roads. There are some people at ASFINAF who refuse to accept that God is male only. So when you enter Austria at Kufstein, there is a sign waiting for you saying: Gruss Gottin.

Slovenia / Austria border crossing at Karawanken Tunnel

Half a month without a post on the Austrian thread? That's too much...

[previous pictures are on the Slovenian thread]

Entrance into Karawanken Tunnel, the border between Slovenia and Austria:

Inside the tunnel:

The pictures inside the tunnel are not that clear because there was not enough light...

There was some parking spaces for emergencies:

Very big vents for air circulation. When I was passing them I felt the car shaking:

Exiting the tunnel in Austria:

A11 autobahn

After the tunnel:

Entrance on the 2x2 A11 autobahn:

Austrian speed limits:

Where's the 50 speed limit in urban areas?

Old Austrian border check-point:

The motorway is quite old:

Tunnel ahead:

What's the sign on the right? (the lower one)

Inside:

A11 / A10 / A2 interchange ahead:

Do trucks really go 60 here during the night?

One question: why isn't A11 named A10? It should have been a single continous autobahn from Salzburg to the Slovenian border...

sign - turn off the car in the case of queue.
road numbers - welcome to Austria! the same thing is with A8/A9 at Voralpenkreuz.

A11 is only 20 years old. I don't remember it as being so substandard. It was opened in 1991 - 1992.

What does this sign mean - "BU" with arrow on yellow background? From the location it's quite obvious they mark some kind of emergency access roads to the motorway, but what does "BU" stand for?
