Is that a significant layer of smog hanging in the air. It looks like it.

Could just be a cloud that was made to look brown by the airplane window.

It's not uncommon to see that smog layer over Miami, especially on a cloudless day like that. That usually means stable sinking air, which doesn't mix very much. Other days the sea breezes will carry it away. I've noticed the cruise ships blowing a lot of smoke that contributes to local pockets, but you can't underestimate the power of all the cars we have either.

Miami has two types of "smoggy" days. One is when dust storms from the African west coast manage to make their way all the way across the Atlantic and linger high in the atmosphere. The other is the genuine kind (i.e. exhaust pollution, etc.) that happens when the atmosphere is still (no ocean effect) and conditions are hot and dry. Fortunately, it's pretty rare but it does happen on occassion.

We are lucky to have such good air quality for such a large city, I don't remember the ozone forecast EVER being in the red, and usually it's green.

That shot looks like it's from earlier this year, during the early part of summer when we were having extremely bad fires across the whole state.
Pretty sure that smoke is from forest fires. It's too resonated to be smog and not light enough to be cloud cover. |
