7-Eleven eyes Visayas, Mindanao

Listed 24-hour convenience store operator Philippine Seven Corp. is considering opening branches in the Visayas and Mindanao, most likely next year.

The operator of the 7-Eleven chain of stores also seeks to open 80 more branches this year as part of efforts to expand its network in Northern and Southern Luzon.

Philippine Seven Comptroller Lawrence de Leon said the 80 new stores would bring 7-Eleven’s store count to 450 by year-end. The company ended 2008 with 370 stores.

Out of the 80 new stores this year, 40 will be company-owned, while the other half will be opened through franchising. "We hope to have a 50-50 mix in company-owned and franchised stores by the end of the year," Mr. de Leon said. At the end of last year, 45% of 7-Eleven stores were company-owned.

Small convenience stores usually sell junk food such as candies, ice cream and soft drinks, as well as wine, lottery tickets, newspapers and magazines, along with a small selection of food and grocery supplies.

Stores that are part of gas stations may also sell motor oil, maps and other transport-related products.

These stores are often located along busy roads, in densely populated urban neighborhoods. Most are open 24 hours, but customers often pay for higher prices in exchange for this convenience.

The company has allotted P240 million for store expansion this year. Mr. de Leon said they would spend P4 million each for the construction and acquisition of equipment of the 40 company-owned stores. They are spending P2 million each for the 40 franchised outlets.

He said much of the budget for store construction would be financed by the company’s own cash.

"We intend to be aggressive in opening stores in major towns and cities outside Metro Manila. We are optimistic about 7-Eleven’s prospects for 2009," Mr. de Leon said.

He said 7-Eleven would also open new outlets in Metro Manila, particularly in high transit areas, and office locations of call centers and business process outsourcing companies.

Philippine Seven operates the largest convenience store network in the country. Last year, it opened 70 new 7-Eleven stores, including the company’s first branches in Zambales and Bataan.

La Union, Baguio, Olongapo, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Laguna, Quezon, Cavite and Metro Manila are still open for franchising, it said.

Convenience stores earlier said they remained optimistic about growth even if the slowing global economy had forced a number of companies to reconsider their spending plans for the year.

Philippine Seven Corp. President and Chief Executive Officer Victor P. Paterno earlier said convenience stores were not affected by the cyclical factors of a particular industry since demand for food would always be there.

Mr. Paterno said they had noticed an increase in demand for their food service, especially their rice meal and coffee products, particularly in stores located in business districts.

The businessman said some consumers trying to save money have shifted to convenience stores for their fastfood needs.

He also said they were looking at lowering prices to respond to consumers’ needs.

Rival Ministop is looking at opening 85 new stores this year to bring the total to 310. Last year, the company opened 38 new outlets.

Shell Select has also more than doubled its branches to 158 over the past two years. It earlier said it planned to invest around P50 million this year to expand its network, but declined to say by how many. A spokesman said the company was capitalizing on the expanding business process outsourcing industry to grow its business.

Oo nga ano, why no one did post Davao Central Convenience Stores here.

I can still remember back then in the late 90's when there was only one 24hour convenience store i knew in Davao City and now almost every block you can find one.

I've always thought it will kill the smaller sari-sari store but it seems i'm going to be wrong.

Araw-Araw! Gabi-Gabi! Sari-Sari!

How's that for a 24-hour convenience store slogan?

Actually, I read in a newspaper, the moment San Miguel decided to take the majority in Petron, San Miguel will convert the Treats convenience stores into san Miguel shops.
