Thanks for your comments.
The people of Santo Domingo really needed a subway or rapid transit system like this one, it's very dificult to move around the city as the transit is really bad, almost all the time.

Second line it's planned to start as soon as the first one is constructred, I believe is a 22 km subway line that will run along the city from east to west.

On schedule and under construction are two very different things, and yes, I did see the pics.

Which brings me back to the same question: IS the project on schedule, it looks like it might be from the GREAT pictures posted recently. Those stations look pretty nice, this is going to be a great thing for Santo Domingo!

It's at or slightly behind schedule. I believe this test was supposed to be between the 5 and the 10. As for the construction, it seems to be on schedule most of the track has been laid down and the overhead wires are being installed. The big date is for the symbolic test run on Febuary 27 (Dominican Independance Day) when the president says he's going to ride on the train during one of the test runs (probably running the full length of Line 1). It opens up to the public March 2008 (with free service) according to wikipedia and a few news articles. I'm guessing that by that time all the train sets will have arrived and been installed.

Yesterday, the president went on the longest test run to date. It spanned 4 stations (From Estacion Isabella to Estasion Pena Batlle). It was about 15 minutes long. Some pics:

Dominican president takes first ride on Caribbean's first island subway
13 February 2008

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) - President Leonel Fernandez hopped aboard the new Santo Domingo subway, the Caribbean's first island underground, taking his signature project on a test run Tuesday.

The 15-minute trip took subway officials and Cabinet members through three stations in a northern section of the capital. Fernandez, who drove the train with an operator's supervision, smiled and called out station names.

"It was a formidable trip," he told reporters afterward.

Fernandez's chances at re-election in May hinge in part on the public's response to the subway system, the first on a Caribbean island. Officials last year said the project would cost about $710 million to build, more than 2 percent of the country's gross domestic product.

Fernandez has promised the subway line will modernize Santo Domingo and help slow the emigration of thousands of Dominicans to places like New York -- where Fernandez himself was raised.

Critics call the project a costly way to combat traffic congestion, at the expense of fighting poverty and widespread power outages, or assisting in the country's recovery from devastating tropical storms last year.

Fernandez said the 9-mile (14-kilometer), 16-station line will be completed in time for Dominican Independence Day on Feb. 27.

The design for the entrance to la Estación Peña Batlle is the most common one used for the underground stations. Only the station at el Centro de Heroes uses the larger, metallic design.
