Nozomi trains from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka arrive every few minutes at major stations such as Shinagawa and Shin-Yokohama, reflecting the large number of passengers using the service for its speed and convenience.

The service between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka takes 2 hours and 22 minutes at its shortest. The trip from Tokyo to Hakata in Fukuoka Prefecture takes 4 hours and 46 minutes.

Railway journalist Jun Umehara said the success of the Nozomi came through shortened travel times as it created room for additional train services.

“It created a virtuous cycle of more train services and enhanced convenience,” he said, calling it a “great success” from measures taken after the disbandment and privatization of the government-owned Japanese National Railways in 1987.

The Nozomi was introduced on the Tokaido Shinkansen operated by Central Japan Railway Co. in 1992 as the third train category on the line connecting Tokyo and Osaka. The Hikari and Kodama trains were in use from the line’s launch in 1964 under the National Railways, shortly before the Tokyo Olympic Games that year.

In 1992, the 300 series could travel at a maximum speed of 270 kph, 50 kph faster than the previous service, cutting trips between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka by 19 minutes to 2½ hours.

The Nozomi service was extended to Hakata on the Sanyo Shinkansen operated by West Japan Railway Co. in 1993. Following the introduction of the 500 series in 1997, the maximum speed reached 300 kph, making it the fastest train in the world at the time.

The Nozomi’s current mainstay N700A series has an improved braking system and can travel on the Tokaido Shinkansen at a maximum 285 kph. The N700S series is scheduled to be introduced from fiscal 2020.

The Nozomi has dominated shinkansen schedules since Shinagawa Station opened in 2003, with expanded services on Fridays to meet an increase in passenger numbers.

Masato Shinoyama, the JR Central official in charge of transport scheduling, said he tried to arrange convenient timetables to always enable people reserve seats. “We hope to continue improving the Nozomi to make the train more comfortable,” he said.

However, they REALLY need to make Nozomi available to Japan Rail Pass holders, probably with surcharge of 20% of the cost of a normal full-fare Nozomi ticket. JR Central is running fewer and fewer Hikari trains, and the Kodama trains only travel relatively short distances end to end.

The JR East anniversary celebration is primarily the 35th Anniversary the start of both Tohoku an Joetsu Shinkansen service (both start in 1982 35 years ago).

It would be nice but there are relatively few tourists who mind more than hourly service. I'm more irritated that they removed the ability to buy a JR pass for Japanese citizens who reside in another country. They are tourists and often have foreign spouses.

I can understand JR's position here. At peak times the Nozomi run at capacity and are still well used at other times, so why would they forego a full-fare passenger and lose revenue? They are obviously worried that people will use the pass to travel up and down the line every day. On the other hand the number of JRP passengers is limited.

As I understand seat reservation is free for JRP holders, so that could be the key to a solution. They could for instance limit JRP holders to non-reserved Nozomi seats at off peak times only and offer seat reservations the entire day as a per train specific surcharge. Another option would be to limit JRP holders to 2 reservation required Nozomi trips per pass.

That would actually be a nice perk. Make the Nozomi trains accessible via reservation only but only a fixed number per train. Once the regular Nozomi seats are full up, open up the JRP held seats to non-JRP-passholders. One of the problems with the JRP is that non-Japanese tourists tend not to travel light and there isn't really much room for baggage in a Shinkansen. Many Japanese either use a carry on or if they have larger luggage will just mail bags to their destination as it's pretty cheap.

I just read March 31, 2017 is the last day of E2 Series Shinkansen service on the Asama service between Tokyo and Nagano on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line. They'll be replaced by more E7 Series Shinkansen trains, though I haven't heard will it be just Asama service between Tokyo and Nagano only or as part of an expanded Hakutaka service all the way to Kanazawa.

Rail passes are sold for tourist use and the Nozomi trains are aimed towards business travelers, so I can understand their mindset to why not allowing JRP holders of the Nozomi trains.
Also there are 2 Hikari trains/hour and secondly there are 2 Kodama trains/hour, which in my mind is really good service.

Not that much change to be honest. Compared to the changes we've seen at Osaka Station in Umeda... Shin-Osaka looks much the same. It's still not that great of a station for such an important stop. There's no lightness or airiness to the station. And it certainly couldn't be called grand.

I agree. Shin-Osaka Station hasn't really changed that much except for some modernized shops and a few other renovations. (I'm surprised they didn't built a big shopping complex north of the station using air rights.) Tokyo Station--especially the eastern Yaesu side--has changed DRAMATICALLY, especially with the massive shopping complex on both sides of the ticket gates for the Shinkansen.

Mind you, JR West had to rebuild Osaka Station because the area around that stations was starting to get run down. Hence the totally renovated station buildings and phasing out the next-door Umeda Freight Terminal for even more modern buildings.

Sorry to dig up an old discussion, but back on page 100, you were talking about what speed restriction would be imposed by the 3000m curve when coming in to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto from the south.

Most people were talking about 200-250 km/h, but according to this JR Central report on the tilt-system installed in the N700-series, it makes them able to navigate 2500m curves at 270 km/h, meaning that this 3000m curve should be doable at even higher speeds than that, probably 285 km/h. That is if tilting-technology isn't improved even further by the time the Hakodate-Sapporo section opens.

Sure, but it still means that they won't have to brake quite as hard, and opens the possibility of trains going through the station without stopping in the future.

If they want to hit that four hour trip time from Tokyo to Sapporo, reducing the number of stops further could be necessary.

The question now is, which stops to cut? Omiya?

Relooking speed limits along the entire line, and maybe faster accelerating trains with higher top speeds, would probably come first before JR East starts talking about cutting stops on Hayabusa services.

On a side note, has the E5 order been completed?

This is what i think ...

Basically Hokuriku Chukyo Shinkansen will replace the current Nagoya bound Shirasagi limited exp.
And Obama-Kyoto route will replace the current Osaka bound Thunderbird limited exp.

So the governor of Fukui Pref. might prefer both of that route to be build following that idea.
