Well, I entirely disagree either. In my opinion E5 both nose and livery ugly as hell. But E6 both nose and livery looks very stylish.

How dare you not include the AnsaldoBreda V250 in this list??

My bad. Yes that one looks probably even worse than any of the ones mentioned previously.

Discussions over aesthetics are pointless. If all you're concerned about is how "cool" your train looks, you wouldn't be cut out to be an industrial designer.

I wouldn't call the designs beautiful, but more "functionally handsome". The functionality of the concept behind the shape has it's own charm from the engineering/operating standpoint- you know the train means business- which is earning revenue for its owner (profits!) in the most cost effective manner and with state of the art technology. That efficiency in some ways has a beauty of its own.

Anyway, in the end, subjective arguments of "coolness" are the realm of fanboi musings which unfortunately pop up on SSC too much, though typically on the other threads. With much owed to quashlo, the level of discussion here is on a high and substantive level the majority of the time

Thanks for the vote of confidence... But it definitely helps that we generally have a good community of users in the Japan threads.

Failed to post this when it first came out...

Sankei News tour of the N700A at JR Central's Hamamatsu Plant on 2012.08.21:
Generally looks the same as the N700, although there are some minor differences in seat moquettes, etc.

More E6 testing with the Z2 unit, in HD...

Between Ueno and Ōmiya:

Some pans up in Iwate near Ichinoseki (2012.11.26). So far just testing on its own... No joint E5+E6 action with this unit yet.

A peek at a variety of trains being worked on at Kawasaki's Hyōgo Plant in Kōbe (2012.11), including both E5 and E6 series, a 700T series for Taiwan HSR, a Taoyuan International Airport MRT train for Taipei, and what looks to be a DC Metro car.
Lots of stock in production, and all fairly visible from the outside... To quote Forrest Gump, it's like a box of chocolates... You never know what you're gonna get.

It's just a little strange that some of those designs are really weird from an aesthetic point of view. Even more interestingly, some Shinkansen designs are actually appealing (500 Series being the primary example).

Anyway sorry for bringing up this discussion. I didn't realise that such topic as design aesthetics and looks may be so sensitive to some. Just thought this is a rather legitimate and interesting aspect to be talked about.

I'm not the biggest fan of the E5's colour scheme, and both of them could do with a little bit of nose tapering towards the tip, to prevent phallic comparisons.
E6 is probabably the better looking of the two, and I must admit the extreme slope on the noses of those two trains is quite appealing, and the headlights are tastefully implemented (Unlike some neighbouring countries' sets). I won't deny though, that JR East could have worked a lot more on the aesthetics of these two.

I think the N700 will become known as a design legend, however. It's absolutely beautiful, everything works together to form a cohesive design 'whole'. The headlights are very stylish, and they serve to complement (and compliment) the curves on the nose. My favourite part of the design would be that little ridge running down the middle of the nose, and how it 'leans back' to give it an eagle-like 'beak'. Good stuff.

Get the url from youtube, find the bit of it at the end which is the part unique to that video, and then put it [ youtube ]blaa[/ youtube] without the spaces.

Personally I like the colorscheme of the E5. It's just that the nose is to long and also emphasizes the width and low hight. Width and height seem better proportioned to me with the E6.
I never understood why the E5 didn't keep the headlight arrangement as on the Fastech 360S.

It indeed looks good and the ride is perfect. However I think it should not have been painted white, but a slightly milder tone, like the Kyushu-sets that have light grey colour.
