ha ha, the first picture sums up the mystique that India is. our Gajraj is crossing the street with mercs and marutis.

Which reminds me, i think Delhi has done a poor job keeping the stray cattle and dog population in the city under check. Its like they follow totally different policies for the older parts of the city and the new ones.

The arch is the India Gate. it contains the name of Indian soldiers who were sacrficed in WW-1. It also has the eternal flame.

Historic Delhi : South Asia's Most Important City

*************Imperial Delhi : The Legacy of British Empire**********

There are cities that are built as capitals & then there are cities that are forged through History. The latter ones are very few. Delhi is one of them. Its the Indian subcontinents' answer to Beijing, Cairo, Istanbul, London, Moscow, Paris, Rome. Delhi is forged by its conquerers, admirers & lovers. From the footprints of Asoka the great to ailing Mughal Empire of Bahadur Shah Zafar, From Iron Pillar to Red Fort, From Qutub Minar to India Gate, From Sultanate to Imperialism, Rising & Falling empires have left its imprints on this incredible city. Delhi is not just the most important city of South Asia, It is also a seat of the Worlds Largest Democracy.

Initially, I was a bit confused about where to start because Delhi has incredible architectural history, be it Mughal, British, Sultanate, Tombs, Temples, Mosque, Forts. Then I realised the best is to go backwards in history from New Delhi to Indraprastha (B.C.). & it also gives me a chance to let the viewers know that Delhi is not "just" a Mughal Capital City. There is lot more to Delhi than meets the eye

*********************INDIA GATE*****************************

Built by British to honor the Indian (undivided India) soldiers who lost their lives in World War I. Its the most identifiable landmark of New Delhi.

Two Hotels of Imperial Time:

Hotel Imperial

Built in 1931 as the most luxurious Hotel in New Delhi, The Imperial showcases a unique blend of Victorian, old Colonial and informal Art Deco. Among Asia's finest hotels, The Imperial, spread over sprawling gardens, offers a unique experience embracing history and modern conveniences.

Hotel Oberoi Maidens

This historic turn of the century hotel, situated amidst spacious gardens in the heart of old Delhi, is renowned for its gracious elegance and old world charm. A jewel of colonial architecture set amidst eight acres of emerald green lawns, The Oberoi Maidens has retained its old world charm down the years. The setting of many a historic event, The Oberoi Maidens played host to the late Duke of Windsor in 1927, when a ball was held in his honour.

Sorry , i could not find better images of these colonial hotels.

Eternal flame has been burning perennially since 1971. Now it burns on gas. The Indian Oil Corporation runs a permanent gas pipeline under the monument.

In fact, there is a similar flame burning in Amritsar at the jallianwalan Bagh Memorial since 2000.
