A sign gantry on the SR 520 floating bridge hit Metro coach 1155 (operating on Route 271), injuring 8 people.

Apparently it was caused by a construction crane dropping a steel pipe, which then bounced off of the bus's roof and struck the overhead sign gantry. What a weird chain of events.

First Hill Line

I'm eagerly awaiting real-time testing. So today I wandered along 8th Avenue South hoping to luck out. Not so, but I did get this shot of one of the cars within the heavily fortified (replete with razor wire) car barn, across South Dearborn Street. I don't really like the color, but once these puppies begin street running, I doubt I'll care!

First Hill Streetcar rollout

My timing was good today. Five minutes after I arrived (at the corner of S. Dearborn Street and 8th Avenue S), the car rolled across Dearborn. It didn't get very far, and as the car was full of dignitaries, I'm sure it was just a photo op. Perhaps real testing occurred afterward. But I got my pix.

Fascinating video from within the maintenance buildings and more pictures of the First Hill streetcars in final assembly. From The Seattle Transit Blog.

Heads up, there's two transit-related meetups happening next week:

On Tuesday, King County Metro is holding a workshop for their long-term plan at the Central Library from 6 to 8.

On Wednesday, Seattle Transit Blog is having an event discussing ST3 from 5 to 8 at the Rock Bottom Brewery (below the Rainier Tower) with some Sound Transit staff to answer questions.

To lower costs, the cars will be quipped with lithium-ion batteries which will allow the downhill and some of the straightaway sections (inbound toward Pioneer Square) of the line to run off wire and use the batteries. That way there won't have to be as many of the complicated streetcar/trolley bus catenary crossings installed. The breaking mechanism of the cars when under wire will be used to recharge the batteries.

How clever! Where else do they use this mechanism?

The system is also the source of many of the delays of the delivery of the new streetcars (others attributable to changes in fire codes that it didn't quite meet the first time). Glad to see them finally running.

On April 23, the Sound Transit board approved the total budget ($3.6 billion) and final scope of East Link. The Board's approval of the final budget followed the unanimous approval of the final memorandum of understanding by both the Sound Transit board and the city of Bellevue council, centered mainly around the cost of constructing a tunnel through downtown. Sound Transit staff is now preparing the various construction packages for bid. Construction still on schedule to start early next year.

Also on April 23, the Sound Transit board approved the final alignment for Lynnwood Link extension. ST staff will now begin final design in preparation for adoption of the final budget and scope in 2017. The board directed that staff design the line with the flexibility to add two stations, 130th and 220th Street stations, without impacting light rail operations. Lynnwood Link is currently estimated to cost $1.5-1.7 billion, with revenue service starting in 2023.
