The statewide transportation package was signed yesterday and its first affects are being felt. Community Transit has been given the authority to raise its sales taxes by an additional 0.3% (on top of the maximum 0.9% already allowed) to fund new service (including a new BRT route and some frequency improvements on local routes as early as next March). I for one am really excited and will be voting for it in November.

SDOT released an update on the streetcar a few days ago. Nothing yet on the Czechs and their fines, but at least there's daytime tests now.

Seattle light rail extension given environmental approval
22 JUL, 2015

Final design for an extension of Seattle’s light rail network has been cleared to go ahead.

The Federal Transit Administration has issued its Record of Decision (ROD) which approves the environmental case for the Lynnwood Link light rail extension.

Sound Transit will now apply for federal funding to build the 8.5-mile extension from Northgate to Lynnwood

I doubt it's a matter of "paying" fines. They will simply be paid less by ST, as outlined in their contract.

Seattle selects light rail extension option
24 Jul 2015

USA: Seattle’s Sound Transit announced on July 23 that it had identified a preferred option to extend the light rail line to Federal Way.

The southern extension would run from the future Angle Lake stop, along the west side of the I-5 motorway to the Federal Way Transit Center. There would be intermediate stops at Kent/Des Moines and South 272nd Street.

More detailed design work will now be undertaken, including examination of opportunities for future transit-oriented development in the Midway area

Does anybody know when the new trolleybuses will actually enter service (even limited service)? I've seen some of the 40 foot ones around on tests, still haven't seen a 60 footer.

Have some videos and links:

There's also 3 Proterra Catalyst electric buses (powered by batteries, not trolley wire) that will be tested on the Eastside.

Community Transit (Snohomish County) is finally beating out Pierce County. It's especially good timing, since there's a 0.3% sales tax increase on the ballot this November that will fund even more local (non-commuter service).

The King County Water Taxi, which has two routes from Seattle to West Seattle and Vashon Island, might gain a few new terminals and routes on the Puget Sound and Lake Washington.

From rickycourtney on the CPTDB:

Interim routes being considered include
  • Ballard (Shilshole Marina) to Seattle (Pier 50)
  • Kenmore (Log Boom Park) to UW (UW Waterfront Activities Center)
  • Kirkland (Marina Park) to UW (UW Waterfront Activities Center)

It is indeed long! I had to divide it into 3 separate viewings across two days in order to find the time lol. But quite interesting none-the-less. Unlike some car cities, it seems like transit is really becoming a priority and there is actual demand for the service across a fairly diverse section of the population.

FTA announces TOD grants
16 Sep 2015

USA: The Federal Transit Administration announced grants totalling $19·5m from its Transit-Oriented Development Planning Pilot Program on September 14. The funding will go towards detailed planning in 17 metropolitan areas.

‘Transit-oriented development is critical to the success of new projects and to the economy of the local communities they serve’, said FTA Acting Administrator Therese McMillan.

Six of the 21 projects concern BRT corridors. The remaining 15 cover a mixture of urban rail modes.

The largest single grant, of $2m, is going to Sound Transit and the City of Tacoma. This would be used to develop a plan for TOD along the proposed 4 km Tacoma Link light rail extension
