Karachi was a very very busy airport once. A lot of European, Australian, MIddle Eastern and African carriers used to fly KHI before. Anybody knows why they stopped? Especially the Euro carriers like LH, LX, BA, AF, KL etc??

European: Most stopped post 9/11 because of crunch in aviation industry which especially made them not being able to compete with ME airlines. Couple that with the image we got after that and the ethnic/political violence.

African: During the 80s, most african countries had a good economy and many pakistanis lived there (myself included actually my father). There was lots of traffic during those days. But during the early to mid 90s, most african economies collapsed, the currencies became worthless, corruption skyrocketed and most expatriates left those countries (myself included).

Australia: I dont think we ever had enough traffic or Qantas had a flight to pakistan.

ME: They have actually grown in number and frequency both because now there are most expat pakistanis and because they have taken over the European airlines businesses. There are probably more flights to ME from karachi than all local flights put together.

Unlike Islamabad, most foreigners to karachi come for business but these days they prefer arranging the meetings either online or at an alternate location mostly Dubai.

Qantas flew to Karachi before. U can search for Qantas destinations in wiki and in their former destination list, there is KHI. Also, it is mentioned in the wiki article for Jinnah Intl Airport.

Middle East, I meant to mention countries like Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, and Libya. RJ used to fly KHI b4 as well as MEA, Syrian Arab etc.

I think they prefer online / meet at DXB cuz of safety lol. BTW, which African country have u been in?

I got the list from the airport's website by checking which flights arrive/depart. Isn't GMG the bangladeshi airline or is there another one too?

Never knew Qantas flew to karachi...its a bit of a surprise.

MEA, EgyptAir, etc provided links to other african countries like I said before. But since the pakistani expats left africa (mostly), these routes stopped. For example, PIA used to go to Nigeria during the 80s. I lived in NIgeria during the 80s and first half of 90s. Then like everyone else, we too left.

GMG is a Bangladeshi airline, but BIMAN Bangladesh also flies to KHI still, although their frequency is reduced due to lack of aircrafts!

About Africa, hmm I wonder how EK and QR does well in routes like Lagos, Accra, Abidjan, Luanda, and Addis Ababa.

Lagos is said to be teh Dubai of Africa! - nigeria has over 150 M population with no National flag carrier and very few airliens... QR and EK do amazing business int hese cities becuse tehse airliens provide teh only direct links for these cities to Asia, ME, and Europe! - the other African carriers worth mentioning in this regard would have to be:

Ethiopian Airlines,
South African Airways ---- flies via Johannesburg .... other direction
Egypt Air
Kenya Airways

There is no other African Airline available!
