#PROJECT-Ras Al Khaimah: JEBEL AL JAIS MOUNTAIN RESORT
![]() Live from Dubai: here are some images of Jebel Al Jais Mountain Resort - a tourist village on a mountain in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah designed by Rem Koolhaas of Office for Metropolitan Architecture. ![]() The project, which consists of elements including an inhabited dam, an inhabited bridge and a vertical village built into a cliff, is one of a string of schemes OMA are working on in the United Arab Emirates - including the RAK Convention Centre at Ras Al Khaimah - and which Koolhaas presented at the International Design Forum in Dubai this weekend. ![]() ![]() Live from Dubai: OMA just sent us a few more images of the proposed Jebel al Jais Mountain Resort in Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates. ![]() Source: http://www.dezeen.com/2007/05/28/jeb...oma/#more-2784 http://www.dezeen.com/2007/05/29/jeb...a-2/#more-2800

the project is being developed by Rakeen along with Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. I just read about it in the Financial Review: seems very impressive.
there's a lot of variation between the architect's concept and whats on the Rakeen website. so this project might end up being more conservative and scaled down: unfortunately. http://www.oma.nl/ http://www.rakeen.com/projects/Jabel_Al_Jais.html |

Is it just me or does it look like it was designed by someone who just lost a game of tetris?

Interesting but is it really what the locals want their mountains to be turned into?
Is there much wildlife in the area?

I'm very sure this one will never get built, not in RAK, if it was in dubai they would have built it maybe but Dubai has no mountains of that size.)

They are building the roads to it, carving mountains take time.

Here's an explanation on how to get there: http://www.redarmadapublishing.com/nearside_1.pdf
The road to the top will be 36km from the roundabout. It is drivable with a sedan car to km23, where you reach a worker's camp, with a gate. They don't allow people to drive due to construction activities, but you can always walk. Or bribe them maybe ![]() http://wikimapia.org#lat=25.9265072&...4&z=17&l=0&m=b |

Skiing the Gulf: Ras al-Khaimah revives mountain resort plan
May 7, 2013 11:20am
by Simeon Kerr Dubai is renowned for its indoor ski-slope, boasting a black run for experienced skiers and a parcel of penguins for the kids. Ski Dubai is one of the emirate’s biggest attractions, particularly popular with tourists from the parched Gulf. But its upstart neighbour, Ras al-Khaimah, says it plans to go one better: building a winter resort in its craggy mountains that will offer sweeping open-air runs. Some mountains across the Arabian Peninsula are high enough to see snow in the winter, including the proposed location for the resort on Jebel Jais in Ras al-Khaimah, one of the highest points in the United Arab Emirates. Skiiing in the Middle East isn’t confined to the well-developed infrastructure of Lebanon and Turkey, where a limited number of resorts focus on domestic demand and some limited overseas tourism. ........... Officials say they are experimenting with snow-making machines to overcome low precipitation and produce decent enough powder to lure skiers. And in the summer, the milder weather of the mountains would offer an ideal getaway from the soupy humidity of the Gulf’s coast. Whether this boom-time plan will be revived remains to be seen. Questions remain about the resort’s feasibility, not to mention its environmental sustainability. Either way, it shows that Dubai’s trademark big-thinking is seeping into other emirates as confidence across the UAE returns. ........... http://blogs.ft.com/beyond-brics/201...#axzz2SgfXrEUE
