Okay, so I have these images of the CBD in my head, and I feel the need to photoshop them.
One of the things I'd like to see is more beautification in the CBD. The Strand Street median, especially between Long and Adderley streets, could really do with some beautification. The railing here is falling apart, mostly from pedestrians crossing Strand Street where they shouldn't and climbing over the railings. Here's my idea to beautify the median. Wale Street could do with the same treatment. image hosted on flickr

Wow, this is not a common flight path (flying over the atlantic seaboard) coming into the city, is it? At least, i was never fortunate to have had these views coming in.

That I have to disagree with you. It adds to its character. But I do agree that their are some parts of town that need a lick of paint, and with all the new developments, I'm sure property owners and developers will play their part. |

Sorry, but I also disagree. This part of town will always be characterized by old architecture. It has loads of character IMHO. Sure, some buildings could do with a refurb and some paint, but there's lots happening.
The Cameraland building has recently been refurbished and it looks fantastic. The new Dept of Justice building and the Newspaper House redevelopment all add to the character of this part of the city. Even the offices on top of Picbel Parkade got a new paint job last week. In two years, hopefully the Cape Sun will get a re-clad and we'll have a modern highrise in the vicinity.

I get that but and I love cape town's historic architecture but I wouldn't mind one glass high-rise where that block of flats is

I agree, the old 70's buildings have nasty character. They are a reminder of the brutalist apartheid era, and are simply not aesthetically pleasing. CT should move on with the times and stop being stuck in a time capsule. Fortunately we are slowly heading in that direction.

Briker, why is it that brutalist architecture should be equated with apartheid? I have had this argument on here so many times. Brutalism was an international movement, which had absolutely NOTHING to do with apartheid. You will find perfect examples of brutalist architecture all over Europe and North and South America, and also in Australia. O and have a look around in cities like Mombasa, Nairobi, Cairo, etc. Brutalism boomed there too, in the complete absence of Apartheid.
If you were to find apartheid-era architecture so disturbing, you would find MOST of our urban architecture problematic, and this includes some of the most beautiful examples of 20th Century architecture in South Africa.

I can only imagine a few things that would have been inspired by apartheid in architecture and city planning (e.g. black residential areas that were built far away from cities or next to mine dumps etc). |
