Great pic! That's Smith Street. Straight ahead, at the top of the Berea (Durban's 1st hill of thousands!), is Memorial Tower Building on the Howard College Campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The view from there, looking over the city and harbour, is spectacular.
Many of Durban's streets in the downtown are very wide and many are one-way streets. It gives the city a very 'New York feel', with tall buildings framing both ends. Smith Street (pictured above) runs from east-west (i.e, from the sea to inland), while the adjacent West Street (Durban's main street) runs west-east (i.e., from inland to the sea). Smith Street, in particular, needs to be wide as it's one of the roads that leads out of the city (it leads to Berea Rd, which runs parallel to, and also leads onto, the N3). Pine Street and Leopold Street also lead to the N3 (the sexy new outbound flyover runs from Leopold Street directly onto the N3). |
