City projects on track
Land Hurdles Stall Two Key Projects In North 24-Pargana

Source: Times Epaper
Quote:
Kolkata: At a time when several projects in the state have taken a back seat due to land acquisition problems, here is some good news for the city.
The five major projects slotted for the city are very much alive. These include the East-West Metro, the Light Rail Transit System (LRTS), the much-touted BBD Bag rejuvenation project and the two flyovers — the one from Parama Island to Park Circus and the other over the Vivekananda Road. Of the five, the government has already started work on the East-West Metro that will connect Howrah with Sector V. Work has started from the Salt Lake end. It will also start work on the rest soon.
The state government recently got a major boost after the Centre approved the two flyover projects. While the Parama Island-Park Circus flyover would cost Rs 291 crore, the Vivekananda Road flyover would cost Rs 153 crore. Both the flyovers would be constructed by KMDA.
However, it is the two other major projects, the LRTS and the BBD Bag rejuvenation projects, which are giving the government hiccups. Though chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee himself laid the foundation stone for LRTS before the Lok Sabha polls, work is yet to start. The state government has already signed the MoU with Srei and selected Amex Corporation to provide the technological support, but it is not yet certain when the project will actually kick off. The Delhi-based Consulting Engineering Services (CES) has been entrusted to prepare the detail project report (DPR) for the project.
The BBD Bag rejuvenation project is also in the pipeline. Efforts are on to get funding from foreign agencies and the Centre’s own JNNURM fund. This apart, the PWD is already working on the parkomat project at Laldighi, with amends in the original design.
However, state officials are in a spot after reverses in the elections. In fact, Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality in North 24-Parganas — the only Left-ruled municipality that managed to retain the civic body — had announced just after the results of the Lok Sabha polls that it would not issue any land acquisition notice within its jurisdiction area without the landowners’ consent. As a result, the much-hyped truck terminal-cum-logistics hub at Rajarhat’s Ganti village has been put on the back burner. The IT projects proposed to be set up in the fringes of Rajarhat with global funding have suffered the same fate.
THE FIVE CITY PROJECTS
1. EAST-WEST METRO
* Work has already started at the Salt Lake end
2. PARAMA ISLAND-PARK CIRCUS FLYOVER
* KMDA will construct the flyover to ease out traffic on the Park Circus connector
3. VIVEKANANDA ROAD FLYOVER
* KMDA will construct the flyover. The main purpose is to ease out traffic on Vivekananda Road by connecting Howrah with Girish Park
4. LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT SYSTEM
* Government yet to start work. The alignment will be from Joka to Barrackpore
5. BBD BAG REJUVENATION
* Government yet to start work. The government is planning to identify sources of funding
PROJECTS THAT REQUIRE LAND ACQUISITION
* Truck terminal-cum-logistics hub at Rajarhat
* IT hub at Rajarhat
Government is yet to decide when these projects will start

Since it is impossible to phase out any buses on 31st July we are looking at a situation that both these new ones and the old ones would run together for months.

Also the report cites that they will be owned by WBSTC, so does this mean the other bus companies such as CTC & private and mini buses get nothing?

CTC not getting any new buses can come as a surprise as both are govt run agencies and its the govt which is procuring the buses..
but why wud pvt bus operators get those???i havent heard anywhere that the govt has purchased buses for the private operators..

Maybe i misunderstood/misread. It is concerning that private operators have not done any thinking on how they will procure the new buses

Didn't spot this earlier - surely this report contradicts itself on the LRTS front! Thanks to our great forum members we know the EW metro report part is true. So not throwing the report away, but the question marks remain.

hometown was turning up to be such a nice mall..but they killed it with their bright orange small banners everywhere. a large full breadth banner in 1 or 2 places would have been ok.
