KYM to sign RM300m medical hub deal soon
By Francis FernandezPublished: 2009/06/17

The medical complex project in Malacca is expected to see KYM back in the black as early as next year, says KYM group managing director

Property developer KYM Holdings Bhd (8362)is expected to sign an agreement as early as next week to help build a RM300 million medical complex in Malacca, its group managing director Datuk Raymond Chong Thin Choy said.

"Construction of the medical hub should start by early next year," Chong told Business Times in an interview.

The federal government-funded project, under the Ministry of Health, will include construction of a state health administration centre, nursing institute and public health laboratory.

KYM, controlled by Datuk Lim Kheng Yew, will have 70 per cent stake, while its partner in the venture, Yayasan Melaka, a state government agency, will hold the remaining 30 per cent.
The project is expected to see KYM back in the black as early as next year, said Chong.

"We are targeting to break even in the financial year ending January 31 2010 and rake in sustainable profits from 2011 onwards."

KYM last reported a profit of RM28.7 million in 2006.

Its return to profitability and planned transformation from property developer to infrastructure player hinge largely on the sale of its landbank in Perak to Brazil's Vale SA, the world's biggest iron ore producer.

Completion of the multi-million-ringgit deal will help KYM degear itself, bringing its gearing ratio to as low as 0.41 time, or RM29.08 million, from the current 8.94 times, or RM209.73 million, while its net tangible asset is poised to rise to 89 sen a share from 29 sen.

The metal producer, which intends to pump in as much as RM9 billion into the Perak economy, has agreed to buy land in the silver state from KYM for RM101.9 million.

Vale also has an option to buy more land from KYM for RM93.7 million.

"It's truly a godsend," said Chong, adding that KYM is hoping to get as much as 10 per cent, or RM900 million worth, of the construction contracts on offer by Vale.

Securing RM900 million worth of jobs could help keep KYM busy for the next three years. Vale is expected to start developing the land as early as next year.

Chong also said that KYM in-tends to venture into quarrying in Perak to complement Vale's operational needs.

Green Light For H1N1 Treatment At SIMC
June 16, 2009 21:33 PM

KUCHING, June 16 (Bernama) -- The state government has agreed to let the recently-completed Sarawak International Medical Centre (SIMC) in Kota Samarahan near here, to be used temporarily for the treatment of influenza A(H1N1) in the capital.

Social activist Datuk Ang Lai Soon, who is also Sarawak's St John Ambulance chairman and commander, said the gesture would help the state medical department tremendously, as more than 300 beds in a well-equipped and planned hospital could make a difference at this most difficult time.

"More people can be treated and saved, for which we thank Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his government profusely," he said in a statement here.

This followed the launch of St John Ambulance Sarawak Flag Day by Taib, who is also its president.

SIMC operates as the sister facility to the Normah Medical Specialist Centre here, but will provide a broader range of treatments and services specialising in heart disease, kidney disease and cancer.

IJN perlu lebih banyak mesin Infant Flow SiPAP
22 Jun 2009

Oriental in RM200m hospital venture
By Vasantha Ganesan
Published: 2009/06/23

The auto and plantation group will hold a controlling 51 per cent stake in the specialist hospital in Malacca

Auto and plantation group Oriental Holdings Bhd (OHB)(4006) plans to open a RM200 million specialist hospital in Malacca in 2012 to strengthen its healthcare division.

Called the Melaka Straits Medical Centre, OHB will hold a controlling 51 per cent stake in the hospital that will be located in the new reclaimed coastal tourist township of Klebang in Malacca.

Boon Siew Sdn Bhd, the controlling shareholder of OHB, will hold another 20 per cent, followed by Bagan Specialist Centre with 29 per cent.

Boon Siew also holds the majority stake in Bagan Specialist Centre which is located in Seberang Prai, Penang.
"This 300-bed hospital will offer multi-diciplinary specialist healthcare services with niche specialisation in heart, lung and cancer treatment," OHB director Datuk Dr Tan Chong Siang told Business Times.

Dr Tan said Malacca was chosen because land was available. The reclamation project there is handled by Ultra Green Sdn Bhd, a construction and property development subsidiary of OHB.

The hospital is expected to create 500 new jobs. Construction is due to start in November this year.

"We choose to expand at this time of challenging economic situation because we see the synergistic opportunity presented in a field we have been involved in for the past 22 years," said Dr Tan, who is also the medical superintendent of Bagan Specialist Centre.

"It is a concept well received by the public from our track record, we believe we are ready now for expansion," he added.

According to Dr Tan, the existing hospital, Bagan Specialist Centre in Seberang Prai in Penang, operates on the basis of good quality at minimum cost, minimum discomfort and optimum speed. It plans to do the same for the new hospital.

In the year ended December 31 2007, Bagan Specialist Centre made a net profit of RM6.83 million on revenue of RM39.23 million.

As for OHB, its net profit eased 3 per cent to RM314 million in 2008 while revenue was up 14 per cent to RM5.1 billion.

Almost business as usual
By : Eileen Ng

KUALA LUMPUR: The influenza A (H1N1) pandemic will have minimal impact on healthcare tourist arrivals to Malaysia this year.

Private hospitals and medical tourists service agencies said they expected a 5 per cent drop in travellers seeking medical treatment here.

Some 450,000 medical tourists are expected to come to Malaysia this year.

Association of Private Hospitals of Malaysia president Datuk Dr Jacob Thomas said those who had planned non-urgent treatments such as health check-ups might put off coming here.

"All countries are advising their citizens to postpone travelling unless it is absolutely necessary."

To date, Dr Thomas said, private hospitals were still reporting business as usual.

Prince Court Medical Centre international business development manager Dr Junaidi Ismail said the expected drop in medical tourists mirrored the situation faced by countries worldwide.

Pantai Medical Centre senior manager for group marketing (international) Anwar Anis said even local patients were starting to shy away from hospitals as they were seen as one of the infection hotspots.

"I believed this will soon be translated to foreign patients as they feel they can put off non-emergency or non-essential treatment," he told the New Straits Times on the sidelines of the Healthcare Travel Exhibition and Congress in Singapore recently.

Industry players also played down the impact of the pandemic, likening it to just "the flu".

"It will come to the stage where it is going to be all around us, just like the common flu," said Anwar, adding that people were holding back now to err on the side of caution.

"People are more cautious now, although the H1N1 is just the flu, and it is not as vicious as SARS or even the common flu," said Penang Adventist Hospital director of corporate development Khor Thean Heng.

Medical tourism service agency Med Retreat managing director Patrick Marsek agreed the H1N1 was no different from any other flu.

"Let it take its course. The Mumbai bombings in India and the protests in Thailand are more unsettling to healthcare travellers than the H1N1," he said.

Australia's iSOFT secures 3 hospital renewal jobs in Malaysia
By Kamarul Yunus
Published: 2009/07/13

ISOFT Group Ltd (iSOFT), Australia's largest publicly-traded health information technology company, has secured contracts worth RM18.5 million to provide software licences and support services to three Malaysian public hospitals.

A spokesperson said iSOFT signed renewal contracts with Systematic Conglomerate, a Kuala Lumpur-based prime contractor for licensing and services at three of nine public hospitals that use iSOFT's hospital information system.

"The signing of the contract renewals was done last month. The renewal was effective January this year for Serdang Hospital (Selangor), and January last year for Kepala Batas Hospital (Penang) and Lahad Datu (Sabah)," the spokesperson told Business Times.

In a statement, iSOFT said the contract initially is worth RM18.5 million over five years, with potential revenue of up to RM33 million should the hospitals take up an option to extend the services agreement for an additional three years.

"As stated, the contract is for RM18.5 million. There is potential for an additional RM14.3 million if the hospitals take up an option to extend," the spokesperson said.

According to iSOFT, the agreement is to provide software licenses and support services for iSOFT's latest version of its eHIS solution at the three hospitals.

iSOFT Asia managing director Wim Botermans said the continued use of the company's eHIS solution at these hospitals will position the company as the largest supplier of healthcare system in Malaysia.

New hospital for Shah Alam
Azira Shaharuddin

The new hospital will look like this once it is completed in 2010.

SHAH ALAM: Good news for Shah Alam folks.

They will not only get a new government hospital which will be ready in 2010, but also a new government clinic in Section 19.

Shah Alam Hospital will be located next to the current government clinic in Section 7.

Works on the new hospital had started since November last year.

The 300-bed hospital will be a secondary care hospital, providing basic specialised treatments such as general medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology.

It will be equipped with neonatal intensive care unit, intensive care unit, cardiac care unit and a high dependency ward.

The RM491.6 million project will also house quarters, hostels and housing units for doctors, support personnel, nurses and housemen.

With the new hospital, Shah Alam folks will no longer have to go to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in Klang or Universiti Malaya Medical Centre in Petaling Jaya to receive health care from government hospital.

A Health Ministry source said the hospital will complement Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah and ease congestion there.

Meanwhile, works on the new government clinic will begin in September or October this year.

It will have the same size as the current clinic in Section 7 but with a different design.

The spokesman said the new clinic would enable residents on the other side of the Federal Highway to get easier access to a government clinic.

"Currently, they have to cross the highway to get to the government clinic in Section 7," he said.

Currently, there is only one government clinic in the city.

Columbia Asia
Columbia Asia website

Columbia Asia is a chain of hospitals in Asia, with 13 medical facilities across India, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia. The company is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and was founded in 1994.

The company offers full-service hospitals built in neighborhoods, rather than the central city. Columbia Asia's target market is the fast-growing middle income group.

Columbia Asia hospitals are smaller in size, which helps keep costs down. A typical hospital has about 65 adult beds, costing about $15 to $16 million to build. It sees about 8,000 patients a month, and brings in about $1 million in monthly revenue.

With streamlined administration and fewer beds, the hospitals have an average patient stay of two days.

Most of the company’s 2,600 employees are from the host countries. Columbia Asia hires its doctors and staff largely from the local areas.

The company is in the midst of expansion, especially in India. Columbia Asia has 14 hospitals under construction and owns the property for another 12. Upon completion the company will have 21 hospitals and an airport clinic in India, 11 hospitals in Malaysia, three hospitals in Vietnam and three hospitals in Indonesia, together representing an investment of over $600 million (U.S.).
