Where to park? A big headache at Penang Hospital
2009/07/28 By Lee Keng Fatt GEORGE TOWN: The limited space for car parking has become a major problem at Penang Hospital. It now takes an average of about 30 minutes to an hour to find a vacant space in the hospital compound. Visitors and those seeking outpatient treatment have to jostle for the limited car park lots, currently shared by 3,000-plus hospital staff who work there on three shifts. This has caused many frustrated motorists to leave their vehicles parked illegally along roads leading to the hospital, often causing even the emergency lanes used by the ambulances to be blocked. A motorist, Cynthia Lim, dreads accompanying her wheelchair-bound mother for the twice-weekly treatment at the hospital. “I am often left helpless as I drive round looking for an empty space while my mother is left unattended at the emergency entrance,” she said. Zulkefley Mohammad, 35, also faces similar problems each time he sends his cancer-stricken mother for treatment. Yesterday, he came at 8am but the place was already full of cars, many haphazardly parked at every available corner. “I hope the hospital authorities can find a solution to the parking problem,” he said. Teacher Robert Tan said Penang Hospital ought to emulate private hospitals by renting and converting vacant land into car parks for their visitors and patients. “A hospital is a place where the sick seek treatment. “The sick or those bringing them should not be frustrated by parking problems”, said Tan. Penang Hospital Visitors’ Board chairman Lim Thoon Deong admitted the problem and said it had been discussed many times. “This is something unavoidable but the hospital authorities are doing their best to resolve it,” he said, adding that the completion of a six-storey car park in October would help some of the parking problems. State traffic police chief Deputy Superintendent Wari Khew said police had booked those who caused obstruction on roads near the hospital. |

Health tourism plans for Perak
PERAK is promoting health tourism aggressively to woo visitors who need medical treatment. Tourism Perak Sdn Bhd general manager Norani Samat said there was potential for health tourism in the state as the hospitals in Ipoh and Taiping had specialist doctors and excellent facilities. “Some 60% of the visitors seeking treatment in Perak hail from Medan, Sumatera,” she said. Speaking when launching the Tower Regency Hotel & Apartment privilege membership card in Ipoh on July 24, Norani said apart from health tourism, Tourism Perak would also promote Taiping, Kuala Kangsar, Manjung and the Royal Belum Rainforest. “Perak holds great potential due to its wealth of historical, cultural and natural assets,” she added. Norani said the state was also looking into ways to inject positive changes in the tourism industry by installing proper road signages, upgrading road infrastructure and upgrading security. “Perak is also doing its level best to help the hospitality industry through continuous promotion and advertising locally as well as overseas,” she added. |

Consultant: Malaysia can be medical tourism hub
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has the potential to become a medical tourism hub, says Frost & Sullivan senior consultant of healthcare for Asia Pacific, Dr Pawel Suwinski. “The recent promotion of medical tourism in Malaysia is excellent,” he said, referring to promotional initiatives by the Government and the Association of Private Hospitals of Malaysia. “Health tourism is one of the brightest points in the growth of the healthcare sector in Malaysia,” Suwinski said at a press briefing on the future of the Malaysian healthcare industry yesterday. Dr Pawel Suwinski ... The recent promotion of medical tourism in Malaysia is excellent The latest indicators on medical tourism in Malaysia support Suwinski’s claim. The compounded annual growth rate of foreign tourists to Malaysia seeking medical care is 25.3% from 1998 to 2008. Additionally, revenue per patient grew from US$92 in 1998 to US$241 in 2008. While most foreign patients came from neighbouring countries with less developed medical infrastructure such as Indonesia, there is a growing market in developed countries. Cost and relative political stability lent Malaysia a distinct comparative advantage in the field of medical tourism, said Simranjit Singh, Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific director for healthcare. “There is no denying that Malaysia has an edge over Singapore and even Thailand in this respect.” He added that the recent recession had led to rising healthcare costs particularly in the West, making the Asian region a cheaper alternative for medical treatment. According to a survey carried out by Frost & Sullivan, potential medical tourists are concerned primarily with accredited doctors and nurses, accessibility to hospitals and leisure at their place of stay. Malaysia fared well in all three areas, said Suwinski. Frost & Sullivan deem three other interlocking factors that significantly determine the future of the Malaysian healthcare industry. These are changing demographics (declining birth rate and increasing life expectancy); the growing demand for high quality private healthcare and consequently private health insurance; and changing disease patterns, namely, increased prevalence of obesity, hypertension and diabetes due to urbanisation. |

6 Ogos 2009 KUALA LUMPUR 5 Ogos – Malaysia berpotensi menjadi salah sebuah destinasi pelancongan perubatan terkenal di rantau ini, kata Frost & Sullivan GIC Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (Frost & Sullivan). Hadir sama Pengarah Penjagaan Kesihatan Asia Pasifik Frost & Sullivan, Simranjit Singh. Tambah Suwinski, walaupun Malaysia sedang mengalami pembangunan dalam sistem penjagaan kesihatan, pembahagian pusat kesihatan masih lagi tidak seimbang.

Healthcare Expenditure In Malaysia Increasing
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- Healthcare expenditure in Malaysia is increasingly driven by increased privatisation within the healthcare service provision and upgrading of existing healthcare infrastructure within the public sector. Frost and Sullivan's senior consultant of healthcare Asia-Pacific, Dr Pawel Suwinski, said the market for healthcare services has also received positive impetus from growing promotion of health tourism and development activities. "The total healthcare expenditure grew at 13.7 percent compound annual growth rate from 2003 to 2008, which stood at US$7.6 billion (US$1=RM3.45) in 2008," he said at a media briefing on Malaysian healthcare industry here Wednesday. In terms of infrastructure, Suwinski said, the Malaysian healthcare system was dominated by private hospitals accounting for an average of 62 percent of total number of hospitals annually from 2002-2008. As at end-2008, there were 144 public hospitals and 224 private hospitals in Malaysia. Suwinski said the Malaysian government has put in strong efforts in boosting human resources in the healthcare sector. Nursing, in particular, has shown significant progress and has met the government's target of one to 600 population ratio, he said. -- BERNAMA |
