For the Highland sleeper coming south, the portions are shunted together in Edinburgh Waverley station as usual. Then instead of heading towards Carstairs to join the West Coast Main Line, the train departs Edinburgh Waverley in the opposite direction, taking the East Coast Main Line all the way to London.
The normal route in the London area is Finsbury Park, Copenhagen Jn (turn right off the ECML and ascend Kings Cross Incline to join the North London Line), Camden Road, Primrose Hill, Camden Jn (join the WCML heading north) and along the WCML Slow Lines to Harlesden Jn, and into Wembley Yard. Here the train stops for20 - 30 minutes for a reversal, usually with a different loco being provided to return the train to Euston. Departing Wembley the train retraces its steps to Camden Jn, then down the hill into Euston.
An alternative route after Camden Road is to sweep north via Gospel Oak to Kensal Green Jn along the North London Line, and then rejoin the route shown above at Harlesden Jn.
After departure from Wembley Yard heading for Euston, it is also possible to use the "Willesden Relief" lines which pass under the main lines, regaining the WCML Fast Lines at Willesden West London Jn.
The corresponding northbound service is the opposite of any combination of the above, although use of the Willesden Relief Lines is more likely for the northbound service on a Sunday evening when traffic is comparatively light than for the southbound service which arrives during the Monday rush hour.
The Lowland sleeper follows the same route, except the Glasgow portion has to be retimed and diverted to Edinburgh, before joining the Edinburgh portion and heading off up the ECML.
Just to reiterate, none of this is taking place currently. You will need to wait until next year for a repeat performance.

Testing begins on Chiltern Oxford link
Tuesday, September 29, 2015

CHILTERN Railways reached a key milestone on the construction of its new link to Oxford on the morning of September 28 with the first driver training run over the new 1km chord at Bicester, which connects the London Marylebone - High Wycombe - Banbury line with the Bicester – Oxford line

In addition to construction of the chord, the project involved reconstruction and track-doubling on the Bicester – Oxford line, which has now been upgraded for 160km/h operation. Two new stations have been constructed at Bicester Village, near the former Bicester Town station, and Oxford Parkway, a park-and-ride facility situated alongside the A34 highway at Water Eaton north of Oxford. The existing station at Islip on the Bicester - Oxford Line has also been rebuilt and 37 level crossings have been eliminated

Here is my video from a recent ride on Abellio Greater Anglia Class 379 Electrostar train between London Liverpool Street and Cambridge Railway Station:
overall, it was comfortable, cheap and empty!

Scrap inter-city franchising, say Virgin and Stagecoach
20 Oct 2015

UK: Stagecoach Group and Virgin have called for the replacement of the ‘confused and damaging’ system whereby franchised and open-access train operators compete on inter-city routes.

In their joint response to a Competition & Markets Authority consultation on options for increasing on-rail competition, Stagecoach and Virgin suggest a new model where bundles of train paths would be auctioned by a national letting agency, which would set conditions to protect performance and network benefits, including integrated ticketing and rolling stock allocation. A ‘more efficient and appropriate’ track access charging structure would also be required

Network Rail awards East West Rail contract
04 Dec 2015

UK: Network Rail announced on December 4 that it has awarded an alliancing contract to Atkins, Laing O’Rourke and VolkerRail covering the design and construction of Phase 2 of the East West Rail scheme. Involving the reopening of currently disused railway infrastructure between Bletchley and Bicester, Phase 2 would enable passenger services to run from Bedford and Milton Keynes to Oxford, and from Milton Keynes to London Marylebone via Aylesbury.

The contractors will now work with NR to develop the outline design and construction programme for the project, including a new station at Winslow, two new platforms at Bletchley, the construction of 18 new overbridges and upgrading 97 level crossings. Once this initial work programme is complete, NR says that the alliance partners ‘will consult with the Department for Transport to agree the final design scope, construction timetable and costs’, aiming to submit an application for legal powers to undertake the works in autumn 2016
