JR Kyushu set for stock exchange listing
Thursday, January 29, 2015

JAPAN's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MILT) announced on January 27 that Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu) will be listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in the 2016 financial year, becoming the fourth of the former Japanese National Railways (JNR) companies to do so

The government will submit a bill to the House of Representatives in the current legislative session to revise the current law on JR companies, exempting JR Kyushu from the requirement for the transport minister to approve all appointments to its board. This would also require JR Kyushu to commit to retaining its current 2122km network

I believe a lot of these improvements are coming to better accommodate non-Japanese visitors--especially those coming to the Kanazawa area starting March 2015. Indeed, I would not be surprised the refurbished 681/683 trainsets will now add announcements in English, too.

Mobile-seats on car-ends. << Can't understand well this point:
モバイル用のコンセントを拡充します。全ての編成のグリーン車全席、普通車客室出入口付近の席にコンセントを整備します。

Women-only seats will be provided with throw blankets by summer of 2015. (for those who find the airconditioning too cold, presumably)

Hitachi to buy Italian railway firms

TOKYO — Hitachi will buy the rail and traffic signal businesses of Italy’s Finmeccanica for an estimated $2.1 billion, reports said on Tuesday, as the Japanese firm looks to expand overseas and challenge major international railways firms.

The Italian defense and aerospace company has agreed to sell its rail car unit AnsaldoBreda and Ansaldo STS, the world’s number two traffic signal company, to the vast Japanese conglomerate, according to reports by the leading Nikkei business daily and other major media.

The purchase is expected to be worth more than 250 billion yen ($2.1 billion), with Finmeccanica set to announce the agreement as early as Tuesday, the top-selling Yomiuri newspaper said.

“It is true that we are negotiating with Finmeccanica over the railway businesses, but the reported agreement has not been announced by our company,” a Tokyo-based Hitachi spokesman told AFP.....to read more click here

Global rail news quoted the price for Ansaldo as being 36 million euros - unless there's some strange valuation going on involving the debts that the company holds?

It will be very interesting to see if the Shirayuki train will have both Japanese and English announcements, since it's designed to link Niigata Station with the new Hokuriku Shinkansen service. Of course, this service plus the new Hakutaka Shinkansen service probably means the end of the Hokuetsu limited express train between Kanazawa and Niigata.

Truly the end of an era with the phaseout of regular Twilight Express operations. And they'll be doing that next year with Hokutosei and Cassiopeia.

Mind you, I can't wait for the first videos of the first operational trains to the Ueno-Tokyo Line in a couple of days. Maybe we'll finally get rid of a lot of ridiculous overcrowding on Yamanote and Keihin-Tōhoku Lines between Ueno and Shinagawa Stations.

Ishikawa Railway and Ainokaze Toyama Railway

Joint the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, part of the JR West network in Hokuriku Region has transferred to the new third-sector railway companies: Ishikawa Railway, Ainokaze Toyama Railway, and Echigo Tokimeki Railway.

Ishikawa Railway (IR)

From 14 March 2015, the IR Ishikawa Railway manages the passenger operations of the 17,8 km section of JR West Hokuriku Main Line between Kanazawa and Kurikara (total of five stations).

The company operates a fleet of five 2-car 521 series EMU trains. Trains will normally be operated as two- or four-car formations.

______________

Ainokaze Toyama Railway

From 14 March 2015, the Ainokaze Toyama Railwaycontrols the local passenger operations on the 100.1 km section JR West Hokuriku Main Line between Ichiburi in neighbouring Niigata Prefecture and Kurikara in neighbouring Ishikawa Prefecture, with a total of 21 stations.

On the west, formally the area ends on Kurikari station but most services terminate at Tomari with a same-platform transfer to Echigo Tokimeki Railway Nihonkai Hisui Line. Some services continues through this line to Itoigawa.

To the west, most services continue to and from Kanazawa over the IR Ishikawa Railway Line. The company operates Local and Rapid services named Ainokaze Liner between Tomari and Toyama or Kanazawa during the weekday morning and evening peaks. A supplementary liner fare of 300 yen will be required to board these services, and all seats are reserved.

The company operates a fleet of 16 two-car 521 Series EMUs, and five three-car 413 Series EMUs acquired from JR West. The 521 series trains has a new livery with a blue wave design on the seaward (north) side and a green wave design on the landward (south) side.

While the Ishikawa Railway and Ainokaze Toyama Railway essentially took a number of ex-JR West 521 Series EMU's that run normally on 20 kV AC power, the Echigo Tokimeki Railway interestingly chose NOT to run the 521 Series (even though the 521's can run on both 20 kV AC and 1,500 V DC power) but got the ET122 DMU, essentially a version of the KiHa 122 DMU JR West operates on certain lines west of Himeji.

The ET122's will run between Ichiburi and Naoetsu on the Nihonkai Hisui Line (formerly part of the Hokuriku Main Line); on Echigo Tokimeki's Myōkō Haneuma Line (formerly part of the Shin'etsu Main Line), they run ET127 (ex JR East E127) EMU's. It should be noted that the JR East Shirayuki limited express service will travel on the Myōkō Haneuma Line as far south as Arai Station.

On formula race cars you would probably call them barge boards, but what are those red/black panels intended for? Given the speeds these trains run and the design of the rest of the train it'll probably not be aerodynamics.
