Coe is head over heels about O2 Olympics test
20 October 2009

TRANSPORT and ticket prices have emerged as key issues after the O2 passed its first 2012 test.

The Greenwich arena welcomed around 40,000 fans to a week of the 2009 World Gymnastics Championships - the first time an Olympic venue has hosted its particular 2012 event.

Beth Tweddle and Daniel Keatings ensured there was success on the mat as they won medals in front of enthusiastic crowds.

Away from the action, there were some concerns about high ticket prices for the weekend event and problems with closures of some transport links for engineering work.

Seb Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, said the championships had been "terrific".

"It's been a great crowd, great atmosphere and fantastic venue," he told the BBC.

"The athletes have reported this has worked extremely well for them in terms of the speed they have been able to get in and out of the venue and the warm-up facilities.

"There are always going to be issues that we have about making sure we have as many people as possible being able to access the venue from various points in London."

He added: "We are working through the ticketing strategies - we realise this is a very serious thing to get right and we will."

Tweddle, 24, thrilled the O2 crowd after her flawless floor routine saw her clinch a gold medal on Sunday afternoon.

Keatings won a silver medal in the men's all-round event, although Louis Smith came off the pummel horse to ruin his chances of a medal.

London 2012: new Olympics structure would 'rival Eiffel Tower'

A £15 million monument at London’s Olympic park is to be constructed under plans from Boris Johnson, the capital’s mayor, to rival the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Construction has begun on the Basketball Arena at London’s Olympic Park, the largest temporary venue on the site. The Basketball Arena will play a key role during the 2012 Olympic Games, with 12,000 seats for the basketball preliminaries and quarter-finals, as well as the handball semi-finals and finals. During the Paralympic Games it will have a capacity of 10,000 for wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. There is no legacy requirement for the Basketball Arena as the Handball Arena will be turned into a multipurpose sports centre

Initial work on site will include some preparatory investigations for the foundations for the arena. Barr Construction, based in Glasgow, Scotland, will start on site in the spring to build the main structure of the arena. “The Scottish government has been quite clear that we want to see Scottish companies get their fair share of the range of contracts from London 2012,” said Shona Robison MSP, minister for public health and sport in Scotland. “The experience of bidding and hopefully winning more London 2012 contracts can only benefit companies as they prepare for the range of contracts on offer for Glasgow 2014.” Glasgow will host the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
