Ah, but the thing here is the proximity issue. Sheffield and Rotherham centres are around 7/8 miles apart, whereas a lot of "Manchester" city centre is in Salford! (Salford is the area to the west of the river in this map).

it is similar in many respects for Newcastle/Gateshead, which are separated only by the Tyne, and function collectively as one city.

I don't like this:

Quote:
TCN aims to create a ‘cultural quarter’ with a museum and arts centre, restaurants and bars, as well as retail facilities. It has signed a five-year exclusivity agreement with Rotherham council to ensure the sites are not offered to any other developer.
So basically, TCN can leave the site derelict and if the market takes a plunge, RMBC can't build on it for 5 years?

This is security for TCN, not Rotherham

Rotherham's YES! Project

Property developer Oak Holdings have announced that the cabinet of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council has approved heads of terms for the £350m YES! scheme and terms for a 250-year lease. The futuristic scheme will transform 327 acres of former coalfield land adjacent to Rother Valley Country Park to create Europe's largest covered leisure based development and the approval is set to boost Oak's drive to attract further tenants...

http://www.rothbiz.co.uk/2008/02/new...-moves-to.html

"Council leader Cllr Roger Stone said: “This is a proud day for Rotherham. We’ve come a long way, with Oak and our neighbours such as Sheffield, to make this happen, and now we have a very exciting future in prospect."

No worries. The Developement Agreement has been a long time coming but it is a sign that things are definitely moving. Expect announcements on more tenants soon.

Sounds interesting.

What exactly is going to be in the development though. I can't remember.

It's a leisure centre with golf driving range etc. I think it's basically be a bigger Ponds Forge, probably mixing sport and leisure.

try this site joz:

Allthough a little out of date, the attached pdf explains the concept of the YES! Project.

http://www.oakholdings.co.uk/Oak%20H...ust%202006.pdf

Planning consent was granted in January 2007. As well as a high tech golf driving range and extreme sports attractions (rafting & climbing walls), it will include indoor entertainment facilities, four-star resort spa and conference hotel, exhibition centre, restaurants, bars, cafés and shops related to activities there. The space includes:
• Entertainment – 219,368 sq ft (10,380 sq m)
• Convention – 246,676 sq ft (22,917 sq m)
• Sports – 631,733 sq ft (58,690 sq m)
• Spa – 51,667 sq ft (4,800 sq m)
• Resort hotels – 353,443 sq ft (32,836 sq m)
• Retail, food and drink – 92,397 sq ft (5,584 sq m)
• Circulation and performance – 210,918 sq ft (19,595 sq m)

I've dug out the site plan, The site lies on the border between Sheffield, Rotherham and North Est Derbyshire. To the South is Killamarsh which is in Derbyshire, To the West is Beighton Village and the Holbrook industrial park at Halfway in Sheffield, and Rothervalley country park and Swallownest to the north being in Rotherham .
The Border mainly being the River Rother that runs roughly North / South. The A57 from j31 of the M1 runs across the top of the site, before crossing the valley to by pass Beighton and head to Join the Parkway into Sheffield by a rather poor route.

Picked this leaflet up today with some information of the projects going on in Rotherham.

It like the look of the station, looks as though they are going to utilise the space a bit more.

Rotherham Station

Award winning international architectural practice Aedas has been chosen to prepare designs for the £2.5 million redevelopment of Rotherham Station. Incorporating a new passenger lounge, retail space and a travel information centre, the station is set to become a "dramatic and architecturally impressive gateway for visitors and daily users." Work on remodelling the station is expected to take place in 2009-2010 and will be the first phase of a four phase programme of improvements that will include lengthening the platforms, doubling the track access and providing lift access to the platforms. The improvements will upgrade links to the town centre and the catalyst for the redevelopment has been Yorkshire Forward's Urban Renaissance programme.

Steelers sign up to YES! Project

Developer Oak Holdings have announced that the Steelers ice hockey club have signed a 25 year lease to become tenants of a planned purpose-built 5,000-seater twin-pad ice rink at the YES! Project at Rother Valley Country Park. The Steelers will be an anchor tenant which will help the profile and drive new business to the centre, which has received outline planning permission for the "biggest undercover leisure and entertainment destination" in Europe. Last month the heads of terms for the development agreement were approved by Rotherham Council's cabinet. Steelers General Manager, Mike O'Conner said: "Operating our own 5000 seat arena with twin training pad will be hugely beneficial for us, we are pointing the way to the future for UK Ice Hockey. Not only will we have our own home on a long term basis we will have the ability to create and run our own junior development programme ensuring local youngsters fill our roster in the future." Rotherham Council leader Cllr Roger Stone said: “We see the Steelers deal as a win-win all round – for the club and its fans, for the sport, and for Sheffield, Rotherham and the rest of South Yorkshire.” The Steelers are set to move to Rotherham in 2011.

I grew up in Swallownest (next to Rother Valley Country Park) and think that this development will be great for the area. I didn't think that the site they were talking about was that big but from all the things they have mentioned building it must be fairly large.

What is the Beighton Link project ? Is it the A57 or some other scheme, as the Marshalling yard to the North of the bypass / and south of Woodhouse Mill is being cleared.

YES project is sat next to the A57 Beighton bypass ( to the south), look at the plan at top of page, Beighton village is just on the left, with railway and river between.

Not that I've seen. The Beighton link project isn't shown on any of the plans I've seen for Yes!

If I'm thinking of the right thing then the Beighton link project is shown in red on the map. The signs say that it is a mixture of Business and Leisure units.
