Looks like normal for Italy: start ploughing snow a day after snowing finished.

Today the digging of the Base Tunnel (8.6km) for Variante di Valico, on the A1 between Bologna and Firenze, was completed. This is the second longest two-carriageway tunnel in Europe, after the Gran Sasso 10+ km tunnel also in Italy. The works on the whole section will end in 2013.

It is the third: there is the Plabutsch tunnel: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plabutsch_tunnel

Considering urban tunnels someone in Madrid and the A86 Duplex may be longer (the latter is a single tube, but with two decks and four lanes).

I must have overlooked the Austrian one... I was sure that someone was going to rectify my statement

EDIT: I rectify my own: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seelisberg_Tunnel is longer than Variante di Valico Base Tunnel which now ranks fourth (fifth considering the tunnel on A86, which I would not consider because it's not a mountain tunnel).

Following ChrisZwolle in the Dutch motorways thread, I'd like to list the works that were completed on the Italian motorway system during 2010 (hoping not to forget some of them):

A1 - new exit at Settebagni;
A3 - renovated sections between Sala Consilina and Padula (15 km), Contursi and Sicignano (800 m), Gioia Tauro and Palmi (10 km);
A14 - 3rd lane between Ancona Sud and Civitanova Marche (33 km);
A28 - new section between Godega di Sant'Urbano and connection with A27 (5 km).
