I've got several questions concerning italian autostradas:

1. why is there a gap between the end of a24 in teramo and the a14 bologna-taranto, although there is a road with 4 lanes. why don't they (strada dei parchi s.p.a.) sign it as a normal autostrada??

2. are there facts that the a31 will be prolonged in dricetion of trento?? there is a current discussion in the italian version of a31 but i dont understand it, as well as a27!

3. when will they start the construction of a15 nord and the autostrada pedemontana?

1) It's a superstrada-level highway, not an autostrada. 4 lanes without emergency lane, speed limit max 110 km/h.

2) They are making the project, however there is strong opposition from the region of Trentino. I do not think it will be made soon or ever

3) Pedemontana is already U/C on one piece (the one connecting a8 and a9) the rest will be soon. TIBRE or the north section of A15 is still just a line on a map

It's a long story. In a nutshell, the first contractor hired to build A24 in the 70's went bankrupt, then it took ages to rewrite and refund the works, and by then they decided to finish the second Grand Sasso bore, and they end without money to finish the sector. Later, there was a fight among bidders, then money got diverted again, then when they finally decided to move onto completion, they chose a less radical alternative, a superstrada (2x2 expressway, maximum speed 110 km/h). It is like a highway, but it lacks shoulders (it has parking bays) and it's got steeper/shorter access ramps. Technically, they can't sign is as Autostrada. That sector is, also, under control of ANAS, not Autostrada dei Parchi s.p.a.

Realistically, it is unlikely that A31 will be extended to Trento. It is more likely that a new expressway (with 1+2 sectors) will connect both valleys.

I must say, not much. I think it happens a couple times a year, maybe less. Some time ago even the ex Minister of Transport was caught driving in the wrong direction in a motorway near Genoa

EDIT: I correct myself, I found some statistics:
http://www.omniauto.it/magazine/1073...romano-allarme

In 2009 there were 190 documented episodes of driving in the wrong direction, 89 of which were in grade-separated dual carriageways roads. Out of the 190, 45 were made by foreigners; 38 by senior citizens (over 65).

Today new rules for newly-licensed drivers came into force. For the first year they can drive only cars with maximum power of 70 kW, and specific power less than 55 kW per metric ton. Moreover, the maximum speeds for these drivers are 100 km/h in motorways, 90 km/h in superstrade highways.

http://motori.corriere.it/motori/var...4f486ba6.shtml

Here a pdf with the list of cars that meet requirements:
http://www.corriere.it/Media/pdf/201...no-a-70-kw.pdf

But why they don't connect A24 directly to A14?

Actually it seems quite common not to connect more directly important roads from different owners. Like A4 and Torino bypass.

They couldn't because the last section is a superstrada, not tolled, while the A14 is tolled. These two kinds of road are never linked together.

But A4 and Tangenziale di Torino are connected. Usually in Italy autostrade from different owners are linked wonderfully, so that you don't even know that the owner is different. A4 is run by 4 different companies, A12 by 3, A3 by 2, but you won't notice.

Autostrade and superstrade, on the other hand, as I said are never directly linked.

Talking about new Italian motorways did you already written about the A33 Asti - Cuneo?

From January 2011 it became partly opened to public traffic!

Do you have a news source that can confirm the opening of A33?
