A1 and A3 are not very directly connected ??
that's not right.
A1 becomes A3 just south of naples and you don't need to go trough an interchange to swithc from the first highway to the second (to be honest there is an interchange but is for naples harbor, the highway itself goes trough it witouth end)

Also my hometown Pavia (80.000) have a "Tangenziale", and I guess it's a foundamental infrastructure for all the traffic incoming and outcoming, especially the "heavy" one, generated by trucks.

mea culpa - while i say tangenziale, i mean this double motorway (as first photo in post #235), and you call all the bypasses tangenziale. Pavia has just an normal bypass as far as i know. (btw Max Pezzali is from Pavia, right? )

Ok. Maybe there is a problem of the language. It's true, I tend to call bypasses Tangenziale. I don't find any other english word that suits well for it.

P.S. unbelievable, do you know the small Pavia...and also Max Pezzali?

I know that, I've driven there. Still, going over A30 and then autostrada with unknown number (goes towards A16) is a much faster and especially safer way to come from A1 to A3. But that route is not direct. Actually, A3 from Napoli to Salerno can be hardly described as autostrada. That part of A3 is probably the worst one of the whole route to Reggio di Calabria (although it is slowly being upgraded). I have a feeling, that A30 will be extended to A3 sometime in the future to bypass Salerno. Which would quite aleviate congestion that happens there before too short, too curvy and too dangerous exits on A3.

Thanks!
Design of that R30 and A30 interchange makes me think, that A30 will be extended to A3 someday.

Within this month they got to open the forth lane on A4 even on the other direction (Bergamo-Milano)

I recently ran on this stretch and it is really impressive, overall the work they made with those supermassive 'anti-noise' barriers: never seen so tall ones
And even to travel with 4 lane for 50 km or so is quite a strange 'sensation'

I'm looking for pics...

Amazing roads!

I have few questions:

1. What are the differences between an Autostrada and Superstrada

2. Let's take the A7 for example... It is obvious that the northbound direction is much straighter with much more expensive structures. I presume the southbound direction is an upgraded regular road.
a) Are there plans to upgrade the whole thing to double the northbound route?
b) What are the lowest speed limits on the most critical curves on the southbound route?
c) What is the difference in number of lanes?
d) Is there a really decent alternative road (since the old road is used for the autostrada)

3. What are those things on the 6th Milano pic (with the roundabout), that look like a tunnel skeleton?

Autostrada should be motorway, SUperstrada should be expressway. of course, it's not allways like that, so we have A3 which looks more like expressway, A10 too. but autostradas are mostly main routes, superstradas are not on such important sections.

A tangenziale is some kind of a ringroad, or an acces road to a city.

Other word for bypass for city uses. Usually big cities have tangeziale with many junctions and bypassing autostrada has only two or three junctions to tangenziale.

As x-type correctly said autostrada is motorway (normally with toll) and superstrada is expressway (always free)

Another difference is the maximum speed: 130 km/h on autostrada and 110 km/h on superstrada.
Infact superstradas can have a bit less wide lanes (just a bit) respect autostradas ones

Signs for autostrada are green while for superstrada are blue

Yes, I posted it previously in the thread

Quote:

Normally the most critical curves on autostrada get 80 km/h speed limit, but it could be possible in that case limits are even less (60 km/h?), I don't know it properly
Quote:
c) What is the difference in number of lanes?
They both got 2 lanes for the run
Quote:
d) Is there a really decent alternative road (since the old road is used for the autostrada)
If you don't like to run on A7 Southbound I suggest you to use A26, more confortable, with 3 lanes
It reaches Genova Voltri, the Western side of Genova so you'll have to run on Genova bypass to reach the city center

An original way to support roadlights: definitely they're lampposts

tangenziale is a parallel motorway that runs beside a motorway. it is built near large cities. purpose is that you have only one exit (or few) per direction which connects main motorway and parallel one (tangenziale), and at tangenziale you have a lot of exits to city. so, main motorway stays free for transit traffic and that system makes less crowds at main motorway because all exits are placed at parallel motorway

That's not always the case. In Torino, for example, the motorway bypassing the city is called Tangenziale di Torino, but I didn't see any parallel road anywhere near.
