28 km of 3rd lanes on A14 are going to open next Thursday 20th, from Rimini Nord to Cattolica. A14 will feature three continuous lanes per direction all the way from Bologna to Pesaro.
http://www.nqnews.it/news/140922/Da_...re_corsie.html (in Italian)

Some parts of the motorway have been completely reconstructed far from the original stretch, and the old A14 will be reused for new parts of SS16.

A question: what about building a new motorway connecting Boffalora/Magenta - Bereguardo/Pavia - Broni/Stradella?

The track should be like this → https://maps.google.it/maps?saddr=SS...p=2&sz=16&z=10

Google Mapes says that 68,8km are driven in 1h10m, so at an average speed of 59 km/h!

Building a new motorway the time would be halved and many of the southbound traffic coming from the so called "Alto-Milanese" would be split into 2 motorways: the A8+A50+A1 and the SS336+New Motorway+A21 connecting to A1 in Piacenza!

Looks half-way between Tangenziale Esterna Ovest and Broni-Mortara, both proposed and under consideration. Abbiategrasso and Vigevano are complaining long time about their roads, but I think they would want a better connection to Milan, not in the perpendicular direction.
Tangenziale Esterna Ovest would for sure be very useful.

For some reasons, motorways in Northern Italy were always built North-South or East-West. I think it's time to build some in Northwest-Southeast and Northeast-Southwest configuration. I'm thinking about a Brescia-Bologna and Piacenza (or Parma)-Padua

What about a Genova-Parma-Padova highway?

The ideal would be Cremona - Mantua - Legnago - Monselice → https://maps.google.it/maps?saddr=Vi...=9&via=1,2&z=8

Then, thinking about the Brescia - Bologna: the best thing to do, given the fact that A22 will be widened with three lanes per direction, is to connect Brescia to Mantua with a new motorway → https://maps.google.it/maps?saddr=St...=10&via=1&z=10

Mantua would be a real motorway hub!!!

Genoa - Parma have Appennines between them so it would be quite difficult. There's already the A15 La Spezia - Parma motorway linking Liguria to Parma.

But a Parma - Mantua motorway is clearly possible.

Summing this last one with the other two motorways I suggested before turns out that Mantua could be one of the biggest motorway intersection in the world.

The real obstacle so would be farmers!

Not gonna happen. There's no easy valley usable for a direct route, at least on Ligurian side. The route followed by SS 45, on the Trebbia valley, ends in Piacenza, so no material gain from current A7+A21.

It could begin following SS 45, than SS 586 in Aveto valley, an insanely long tunnel from Rezzoaglio to Borgo Val di Taro and then connecting to existing A15.

http://goo.gl/maps/obRHZ

Easier would be going from Chiavari to Borzonasca on the Aveto valley, a long tunnel to Santa Maria del Taro and then following Taro valley to the A15.

http://goo.gl/maps/xVfPg

Easiest is Sestri Levante-Varese Ligure through Vara valley, tunnel under passo delle Cento Croci, follow the Gotra Valley until Borgo Val di Taro and then A15.

Here's the map!

Azure: Brescia - Mantua
Red: Lower-Padanian Motorway
Yellow: Parma - Mantua
Light Green: Rovigo - Ferrara - Ravenna starting from the already 2x2 SS434
Brown: "Romea" Motorway

The yellow route Parma - Mantova can be much cheaper if it merges earlier with A22 or the red route.

And this is the second phase!

Dark Green: Viadana - Mirandola - Ferrara
Red: Linking the Lower Padanian to the Romea

Only projects under real consideration here are red Cremona-Mantua, Ti-Bre (yellow route from Parma but straighter, Casalmaggiore-Bozzolo-Goito-Villafranca di Verona) and red route from Nogara to Legnago with conversion to autostrada of SS434 between Legnago and Rovigo.

Others are just dreams.

You're right Chris! Just after the exit of Suzzara!

And obviously cutting off Viadana to Mirandola track of the Dark Green route merging into a single route by linking Suzzara to Mirandola and then heading to Ferrara!

What you see in this picture, at least 1 year old, is the old Scacciano tunnels being enlarged, and the new Scacciano tunnels, just north of the old ones, being used for the temporarily re-routed motorway.
Now the motorway has ben redirected to its old course, through the enlarged Scacciano tunnels, and the new ones are going to be used for SS16.

EDIT: In the previous post I wrote that old A14 will be used for new SS16, but actually is the "new" temporary A14 that's gonna be used for SS16 variante.
