Maybe it looks narrow because of the barriers right next to it. I wouldn't stop my car there for the world.

Those barriers are sort of 'great wall': make you feel like drivin' in a canyon how tall and continuos they are... oppressive, but cool

I saw nice new barriers last time I drove on A1 near Florence: I'm going to look for some pics

You would, if you had to. If you didn't have to, you wouldn't stop regardless of width.

The whole month of August

Seriously. I can't say: I never drove on it in August. But A3 is famous for its queues: hope in these years traffic condition in summertime has been getting better

What do you guys think of Italian signage compared to neighboring countries?

direction signs look as old yugoslav ones, so i find them really old fashioned and not stylish at all. dynamic signalization often has too much text written so it looks chaotic. other things are good. i especially like the fact that each object at motorway has it's number to locate it easier.

Directional signs are more or less OK, they are big enough and clearly written (if they look ancient for some, that doesn't bother me). However I miss distance signs, they are practically non-existent for distant places, and they are small too, only one destination is written on them, usually distance to next exit or one after that.

Signage on lesser roads is however horror, that is without doubt. You can easily get lost on provincial roads.

Actually there are distance signs for major destinations on the right: but they're few
There are more distance signs on the left, in too little panels: you simply can't see 'em if you don't know their existence in advance and how to read 'em

White part: km of highway from its origin; green: distance to written destination

These other little ones (every 100m) say which is exactly your position on the highway from the origin point (roman numbers indicate undreds meters)

A curious thing: probably on Italian highways you often wonder what this sign indicate

It's the number of the viaduct crossing over

I think Italian signage is good, I can't find any complaints. But that's maybe because I'm very often in Italy so I'm used to it.

I think old Yugoslav signs looked like Italian signs. I don't think they are bad; the fonts are much more stylish and not old fashioned like in France. I can't say I hate all caps either.

I think we got it after observing them for some time.

From the Autostrade company website, a nice comparision between the French Paris-Marseilles Autoroute du Soleil and the Italian Milan-Naples Autostrada del Sole.

http://www.autostrade.it/confronto-i...ilio_confronto

Of course according to those vids the Italian motorway is much better than the French one.

I think you can enjoy it even if you don't understand Italian.

^ Yes, Italian motorways feature more than the French ones. And look more neat, except in south, otherwise they are both good. But I haven't driven much between Paris and Marseille.
