I've used Slovenian A1+A3 instead, I worried about the traffic jam a lot!

Some updates I just read about Milan and around the city

A8 Milano-Laghi current stretch till Lainate: enlargment from 4 to 5 lanes
And (as I suggested ) A4 urban stretch between Sesto San Giovanni and Certosa 4th dynamic lane forecasted

With current enlargement of Milano-Magenta (Boffalora) on A4 and forecasted one between Bergamo and Brescia A4 will have in the future a 120km or so 4 lanes continuos stretch: Brescia-Boffalora

To add the forecasted enlargement of Tangenziale Est and Tangenziale Ovest from 3 to 4 lanes... oh guys, milan is gonna become like LA

I think you should cut back on freeways in that case. LA's road system might look huge, it has one of the lowest lane mile/capita ratio in the United States.

Are those pictures recent (at least some of them definitely are - around Venezia-Est surely)?
Because it looks like, that opening of bypass is still far away. When is it planned to be opened?

There used to be one:

The A1 used to end in Roma, while the A2 did run from Roma to Napoli, most of what is now A1.

The plan is to open it this Christmas (23rd Dec, I think), but I'm not sure if this date is still actual. I saw it in an italian local newspaper from Veneto, I don't remember which one any more.

I doubt that, above picture are from this July and it does look like a lot of construction still to be made.
But sooner the better. Few days ago my friend stayed 3 hours in traffic jam in the middle of the day for no obvious reason, just too much traffic and all exits blocked. He was just to pass Mestre. And as I know situation is getting quickly worse, amount of trucks is rapidly increasing. And no useful bypass exists currently except road Treviso-Vicenza, which probably also is not empty.

this is exactlčy what i wanted to ask: can somebody tell what is the situation at state roads around Mestre, are they too congested either?

and one more question - this first few km's of bypass of Mestre are built (to connect A4 and A27), but what will be with toll station? it is still before that bypass. will they move them somewhere more near to Mestre so vehicles which use bypass would avoid it?

I've searched a bit the Italian forum. Well, they've posted some newspapers, and it seems that the "Passante di Mestre" will be open to traffic in January 2009, but the local exits (there will be 3 of them between A4 Venezia West and A4 Venezia East) will not be finished, and it will take almost a year to finish them?! Anyway, it seems that it will be open for transit, i.e. drivers coming from Trieste, Udine or Belluno could easily continue to Padua and vice versa without having to pay at Venice toll stations any more.

They are removing the toll stations closer to Mestre, so you'll continue without toll on towards Padua and vice versa, only those drivers going to Mestre will pay at Venezia Est, which will be on the current A4 but immidiately after the A4-Passante intersection. The same will apply coming from Padua.

The 4-lane road ("expressway") RA17 Villesse (A4) - Gorizia - Slovenia (H4) will be turned into motorway at the end of 2012.

http://ilpiccolo.repubblica.it/notiz...on=EdRegionale

3 motorways between Italy and Slovenia. If there was a direct motorway between Trieste and Rijeka, it would be 4.
